Rough Road to Recovery...

Hello Everyone,

New to the Evo world, I bought an 03 Evo 8 with 85,xxx miles about a month ago with a foot long list of problems. How anyone let such a nice car go to waste like this is beyond me, but here we go:

Problems:
Whine of death from T-Case
Oil Leak (from intercooler pipe & somewhere around the head area)
Boost Leak
Exhaust Leak (pipes rusted & overheated)
Leaking Ball Joints
Bad Motor Mounts
Radio was rigged by owner with all the speakers cutting in and out
Alignment has seen better days
Squeaky brakes
Bald Tires
Car stalls when coming to a stop with clutch in (thanks HKS BOV)
Rear wiper doesn't work

Sooo 1 month later I've only got:

Shep Stage 2 T-Case
Turbo XS UTEC
Whiteline Custom Ball Joints
Megan TBE
Megan 02
Greddy TT

The car shifts pretty rough with a lot of clutch chatter and the SES light on because of something with my A/F ratio. Starting to feel a little over my head right now...

At any rate, just wanted to say hello to everyone and thanks for all the great write ups on here that have helped point me in the right direction.

-Jon

I give you props for that one. I'd never want to work on all of that.

Ya know what, as troublesome as all that sounds, you're in for a wonderful experience. You're obviously capable of diagnosing problems and getting your hands dirty. Just take it one issue at a time and eventually everything will be perfect. In addition to that you'll have the peace of mind of knowing that from stem to stern, she's yours and it's all clockwork from there on out. I'm actually a little envious, however no, I won't trade you. Keep this thread updated. I'm subscribing. Also if you want an ams solid front motor mount I've got one laying around. Pay the shipping and it's yours. Pm me.

Haha, thanks sir... it just seems like all the expensive stuff is going wrong first. People think I'm crazy for selling my 350z that was under warranty and bought this. I love it though. Also, I PMd you about the motor mount.

The dealership was asking $12,000 and I paid $10,000. I still think it was a good deal, but only time will tell.

Update 10/07/10

Well, a month and a half later and I've made some progress. I'm finding new things wrong everyday, but here's a short review on everything I've done:

Megan TBE/TP/o2 - Sounds great (not too much louder than stock) looks fine, only problem is a small amount of bumper burn but it's no big deal.

Shep Transfer Case - Smooth & quiet like it should be. Not much to say here.

ACT HDTTP Clutch w/ Prolite - Amazing. Barely feels any different than stock & thanks to TTP, no lockout whatsoever. Flywheel makes a noticeable difference in daily driving, but nothing I can't get use to.

AEM TruBoost & Wideband - Wideband works perfect. TruBoost holds boost very well, but it a PITA at first. Mine also made a weird tea-kettle like noise for the first few hundred miles, but is better now.

Walbro 255 - Not audible and not too hard to install. Can't complain here.

The car is being tuned this weekend on E85 with FIC 1250cc injectors & my UTEC. Can't wait.

Unfortunately, that rough shifting turned into 3rd gear grinding, so a Bushwacker rebuild is coming in 2 weeks.

I'll update when I can. Be safe everyone.

TTP does NOTHING to the clutch (or any other part they try to 'brand") except add "TTP' to the part name.

99% of ACT lock out issues are install/setup issues ie they dont properly adjust the pedal after install.

It looks like a fun project and glad your having fun with it, but I think you paid too much. Others Have gotten running/better conditions EVOs for 10K.

But that dont matter, long as your happy and having fun

Any way of proving they don't do anything but add their name?

I've talked with TTP and they say it's modded to cool faster, prevent lockout, and support more power. I have also heard of multiple people still getting locked out on a normal ACT even with the clutch pedal engaging as high as possible.

So far I haven't heard of anyone being locked out of the TTP version, so if you have proof please let everyone know.

Otherwise, from here-forth you shall be known as The Grinch for trying to ruin my day.

Looks like things are coming together for you!

Everything may seem a pain now, but just think of the security you will feel later on knowing you have thoroughly went through everything, and know your car inside and out.

On a side note, I will be coming through St. Louis this weekend (sunday) and there is a small meet at BWW in wentzville. Just some guys from a smaller forum getting together since im just getting my car back after a year. Your more than welcome, so pm me if your interested. If not, good luck with the car!

There is a reason they arent allowed to be a vendor here anymore. Too many lies, false dyno numbers, etc.

Sorry if you wanna call me a "Grinch", but Im just trying to look out for my fellow evo owner.

Btw BOOSTED TUNING does NOT sell ANY parts. So its not like Im doing this to get a sale or something. Just trying to look out for my fellow evo owner.

Nah, I was joking about the Grinch, but where the hell were you before I bought it???

I'll just hope everything works out, but thanks because I was looking into their transmission rebuild instead of the Bushwacker. Now that you mention it, every TTP account here does have the words "Account Disabled" after it. I guess I just didn't put 2 and 2 together.

You'll be fine. Just know you have a regular ACT HDSS clutch. Its a great clutch. I run it in my car.

Another FYI, they stole their TTP built motor description on their website from Bushurs website.

Good luck on your project
