Hey Everyone!!!
Hey Everyone!!!
Hi all,
Im new to this forum and im new to Mitsubishi. Ive drove Honda preludes all my life and now i finally bought my dream car. Yes i am still young but have a passion for learning and listening to advice about cars. I personally do body work and paint cars, and have done a engine swap before and changed a clutch and so forth. So i have some knowledge in the mechanical field. So obviously the Evo is a big upgrade for me from a little honda and there are things id like to know. Its a 2003 evo with 54k miles on it. The cars looks like it was taken car of but i still have many questions since im new.
1. What is the inter cooler sprayer for?
2. What should i watch for in this specific model at this mileage
3. It has a aftermarket blow off vavle, should i change it?
4. Do blow off vavles leak and cause compression loss?
5. It has HUGE piping but a stock header and i want to get rid of the exhaust and go to stock. Sounds great it's just i want a quiet car now. So where can i get a oem muffler or is anyone looking for a full exhaust bc, ill trade you for a oem one.
6. Since its turbo and i believe the piping is 3in if not like 3.25 is it really helping horsepower wise? ( i mean of coarse there's more air flow but still)
7. It has a intake filter. But its dirty and looks crappy. What brand is good for the evo. ( Ive personally always used aem)
8. The hood has the opening for cool air to come in for cooling. What about when it rains? Is this the cause of all evo's having rusty headers?
9. What am i suppose to refill the intercooler spray with?
10. What type of tranny oil/fluid can i use other then OEM. I live like 60 miles from a mits dealer.
11. Do you all run 89 octane or 92/93 octane?
12. Any clutch recommendations? Its FRIED!
13. What kind of oil does everyone use, bc ive used fully synthetic penzoil for years!
If your going to answer a question plz just put A.#1 for example so i know what your answering. Or just the #. Id appreciate your help to answer some of these questions. Thanks guys and hope one day ill be useful on this forum!

1. The intercooler water sprayer is to help cool down the intercooler well the stock one anyway to help it dissipate the heat. As it will become heatsoaked after a couple of runs. the stock intercooler really isnt good for endurance when its in warmer climates. But it does well in the winter. Nothing a bigger intercooler cant solve.
2. Just check the oils of the differential, the motor oil the usual no transfercase wine. The routience maintenance brakes, coolant stuff like that.
3. It depends on what kind ou want there tial or hks. The stock bov its up to you just be careful of the knock-offs. The point to a bov is to make noise and to stop the turbo from overspining when it releases the air into the atmosphere when you let your foot off the gas. The wastegate is to prevent you from overboosting over the limit the car can boost at without blowing up from overboosting.
4.Blow-off valve dont leak all they do is bleed out the air int he system when your foots off the gas. No they dont cause compression loss only if it overboosts and cause your rings to fry out from it properly not doing its job. Thats why you must be very careful about the knock-off and get one from a trusted source. You pay more but you get what you pay for.
5. Oem exhaust is good no problem with having that but try to get a used one from the forums.
6. you answered your own question. It does help but I dont knwo the actual size of the piping do you mean the intercooler piping of the exhaust oor the turbo-back exhaust itself. The best size exhaust no exhaust but you dont want to go that route. Its up to you for personal preference it does add horsepower. With a proper tune you can get even more.
7. You can get another stock one or a k&n reuseable one where you can wash it off yourself. Its up to you thats a personal preference thing.
8. The vent is to let all the hot air out aswell as let the air in the way how the vents come up is to make sure the rain doesnt land on the motor too much . But rusted stock headers are normal thing on these cars and just about all the stock turbo cars I know dont mind it.
Thats from all of the heat on the other hand if you see alot of black soot on there like from a car thats running seriously rich pay very close attention and a loss of boost pressure check it for cracks.
9. You can spray the intercooler with simple water but make sure its diluted because you dont want the lead impurities clogging up the pump or from it rusting up. Your best bet is to remove it and get a bigger intercooler overtime if your worried about heatsoaking. Because once it gets cold outside you wont really need it and it will probably freeze up.
10. They have different combos but one i hear that you have to get it specifically from the dealer im not sure im not good in this field i just got my car.
11. The best is 93 the lower the octane the car wont get up to its full potential becuase it will retard the timing and make you lose power to make the car run for that octane gas that you will be using. I always run 93 no matter what.
12. I always recommend the stock clutch. Since I will be daily driving the car and dont want to really put stress on it as the parts are really expensive but its worth it. You have to get which ever one is right for you. But be careful though you have to decide what will you be using this car for and some aftermarket clutches lock you out of certain gears soooo choose wisely.
13. Mobil-1 for the motor oil from what ive been told. Adios is anyone else can chime in that would help out too. Please excuse me if I spread any information that wasn't true and if I did I stand corrected as I am here to learn about this car too.
Thanks IB for all the info. Umm as far as the BOV umm to be honest its like purple it looks like the cheap ebay junk? What do you recommend for the evo? I want the sound no matter what but i want safe performance. Also im looking for a daily driving clutch i dont drag or go to tracks. Sure i may gun it a few times here or there. But is exedy good? Ive always used them on the hondas. Its just that that comparing a honda to a evo is like way off. Were talking boost here and 4 wheel drive. I just want to get a normal clutch thats not 500 bucks. And that dosent break or give me pressure plate failure.

Well exedy is good but the stock is good too. I think exedy is around a little bit cheaper than stock you just have to find out the pressure clamping force of the clutch that meats your specifications.
Tell the person you ordering it from that your using it for a daily driver and you may mod it for just a little bit of power and spirited driving not a drag weekend racer thats all. Hmm the BOV is probably a greddy or greddy knock off. I dont know of any hks bov that purple if im mistaken pictures would help. The hks model would be good but you have to get the piping for it to hold it which already has the flange attached to it and your going to need a snap-ring plier wrench so that you can place it on there. The hks or stock bov should be safe but not the stock bov from the 8 becuase its plastic and the 9bov from the mr is made out of metal.
Ok so i got it all figured out with alot of research and so forth. So i found out that i have a Greddy Type s blow off vavle, its funny though i never really looked hard at the BOV bc im occupied with other things on the car, so yea thats a done deal. Now about the pressure plate? Do you know how much clamping force i should be looking for? Oh and also i did alot of research yesterday about intercoolers. Only problem was i didnt know what type to get? I dont need a AMS!!! I personally think the stock will be fine, but if a bigger intercooler helps with power, then what type do you think i should get that will get give be better cooling but wont empty my wallet. Prices are outrageous for this evo's! Im not use to it bc honda stuff is so cheap!

Hmm Yeah parts for this car is anything but cheap and its hard to find. You should be looking at how much are you willing to spend and how much power you are trying to get out of the car. I would take the stock clutch since it doesnt lock out the gears like the other manufacturers and you should be good considering it may be your daily driver right?
My clutch on my other car the srt went out a 50k which is good. Then you have to consider its an awd car theres going to be more stress on the drivetrain more an a fwd car. You stock intercooler should be fine as long as you arent doing back to back run or if your on a racetrack or road-course.
The stock intercooler should be fine up to 320whp but just not with back to back runs all the time. And since its already cold out over here in the city none of it wont matter which should give you enough time if its cold over there where your at. Im not trying to spread mis-information cx racing has a couple of intercoolers but im not sure how they work out. Im not really a fan of big intercoolers because I was not into making a crazy amount of hp.
Ok so ill prob just get a stock clutch. This car has 54k and it slips completely. Im not planning to make any power just as stock as possible. As much as i would like to do all those mods i just dont have the time or money to fool with that. Plus i have no reason to do it bc all we have in town is a bunch of srt4's and dodge cummins, and so forth. Nothing the evo cant handle.
