And you really don't seem to want the thread starter to get an Evo

Ive driven s2ks and im a big honda fan, but I would never sell an evo for a s2k, maybe some day I will buy an s2k for my DD car. if you get an evo be ready to spend some cash on a clutch and transfer case.

Well I'm from Canada and own an Evo IX and I used to live in Edmonton. Here are my opinions on having an Evo up in Canada. I'll just go over the main things, if you have any other questions PM me.

1. I used to own a GSX in Alberta and I had to park it indoors 99% of the time due to the weather conditions in the winter and the fact that it destroys nice cars. If I had my Evo then, I would most likely park it indoors and not winter drive it due to Albertas horrible roads, winter rocks and lack of snow plows.

2. Importing an Evo is a pain in the a$$ and on top of that the amount of import taxes/duties you pay is quite high. If you are considering an X, at all you can get a 2008 X for around the same price as an Evo IX with similar mileage in Canada (trust me I looked). On top of this IX's are pretty rare to find unmolested, unmodded and with low mileage so you'll have to do some serious searching to get one (Evo X's are relatively common).

3. The maintenance schedule is very strict and maintaining an Evo IX in Canada is painfully expensive due to lack of parts and shops with knowledge of the vehicle. I spent over $5 grand in around 3 months to make sure my IX was in tip top shape and up to date with the maintenance schedule from the manual.

4. The Evo is 100% Raw and you can tell by the first 10 minutes of sitting inside it. It's damn loud and you get a butt load of rattles in the dash/strange noises, but they are all totally common with these cars due to the fact they aren't meant to be luxury cars. Almost all my passengers complain about the noise and comfort of my car haha.

I recommend a IX as a weekend warrior or part time driver in Canada as these cars can go the distance, but it will cost you a lot of $$$ (mainly being in Canada). Also be prepared to fork out a fair bit of money for gas and tires as the Evo will eat those up quick. On top of this parts from the Mitsu dealer don't follow current currency conversion rates!

My IX is a garage queen and if I was still in Alberta with it, I would probably buy something more economical and roomy for my daily driver.

Hope that helps!

I’m in the same boat as the OP. As soon as the snow melts my AP2’s going up for sale and I’m Evo shopping. Driving a cheap breakdown prone winter beater half the year and a impractical 2 seater in summer has really gotten to me.
I've done the DSM thing, the 350Z thing and now the S2K thing.... It's time for a Evo!

^^^
Corvette, 2 seats; S2000, 2 seats
Didge Minivan, big 4 door; Evo, big 4 door

Are you calling the Evo a Minivan?

But for real, I am in the same boat. LOVE my S2000, get all sorts of looks in the summer (men and women, kinda scary). But I agree, the lack of room is getting old. If I had a DD, I wouldn't even consider selling it, I'd just boost the **** out of it.

EVO FTMFW. I have owned a lot of different cars in my short life but nothing gets me hard like the evo

It really is the example of the "perfect" all around car! We will welcome you with open arms if you get an evo. If you get an STY we will slap you then beat you in every comparison there is!

My evo is not a garage queen! It see's all elements lol rain snow and a little occasional mud. I really want a ap2 as well but i can't see myself selling the evo for one, unless i moved out to california or somewhere sunny and hot! I snowboards alot too, with my rack and blizzaks my evo is unstoppable! LOVE IT!

It's to bad you have number 6 in there. I have both and I can't imagine selling either. I've had the S for 6 years and the Evo for 2 and love every second of it (even when I had the 2 payments). You say you're possibly saving for an X? Think of paying the S off then buying an Evo? Moot if you don't have the space for 2 cars but totally totally worth it if you can make it happen.

Hardest decision of the day, "which one to drive today?"

I simply cannot have both. Its not a matter of finances, just parking space. And you don't want either of these cars sitting outside in -20 weather. And definately no weekend warrior/garage queen, this car will be used. No payments on the S2000. I'm against financing cars so hence why I mentioned saving up so I can comfortably buy an X with cash.

I won't get an STI for sure. Hate the understeer on those, its like driving a plow.

I do all of my maintanance so that should be taken care of. Speaking of that though, I hear a lot of bad things about the clutch? I've done clutches before, just not in something with such a complex drivetrain. Engine has to come out? What about the tcase, is that also a weak point?

As for the roads in the winter, they aren't that bad...I mean I drove my S2K for 2 winters. What a circuis that was. Plus you see people winter driving STIs all the time. A chip here and there is no big deal for me.

Importing wasn't hard at all for my S2000. Would it be any different for an evo? I always factor in 20-25% extra for taxes and duties. I could get an X, but damn the IXs just look deadly. In all honesty the tacoma is the car for me, but I really really want to be able to get away with doing all of those things and still driving something exciting.

Thanks again for the replies.

Oh yea, are there any specific things to look for when buying an evo (IX for now). I always start with a compression test, maybe a leakdown. But after that its all about knowing the weak points of the car.

Clutch you can usually feel slipping on a WOT run?

I read a bit about your long rod 2.4L. Cool route.

Six years ago this month I got married and needed to move loads of stuff 400 miles. On one trip I removed my Evo's back seat (it makes an amazingly large space) and loaded it to the roof. With that plus the trunk full, I wondered how the car would drive. The answer was just fine.

My new father-in-law had a large radial arm saw and he asked if I wanted it. He was going to be a cabinet maker in his retirement but the saw never saw use. So, out with the back seat again and in this went.

My air compressor rusted out its tank. So, I decided I wanted a big upright unit. Once I bought the thing every friend I knew who owned a truck disappeared into the woodwork. So, with the back seat out again and with some help from a store clerk, home it went.

So, don't say an Evo can't haul. I just wish the Evo had a pass through from the trunk so I could haul lumber.

Similarly, I've used the Evo each time I've moved, and I can even fit my main set of drawers on the backseat, surprisingly. The trunk has a lot of room too. The only things I couldn't put it in were my bed and mini-fridge (which was the biggest mini-fridge I have seen to this day) since it couldn't fit through the rear passenger doors.
