Newbie question

I got my Evo on Sunday (Rally Red) but now I have a question about breaking it in (I know alot of posts have been about this). My qestion is exactly how many miles do you have to have on your car to "break it in?"
I have found people that say 500 miles but then again there are people that say 3,000. I just wanted to be sure before I take a new car to redline (I dont want to break a car that I just got).

i dont know for sure but whatever you do tell the dealer you did the recommended 800 or 1000 or whatever they say to do. i gave mine a good 8-900 or so. worked out fine. broke it in and changed the oil and trans fluid. im at 6500 now, and did the differential fluid.

Well everyone has their opinion on this issue. Its like asking someone what the best exhaust is that out but in all of my previous brand new cars I have always followed this method. Im not saying im right this is just what I did. For the first 500-600 I stay below 3000 rpms. For the next 300-400 miles I would gradually take it to around 4000-5000 rpms. Then at about 1000 miles I started to really lay into it. Now its at 1500 and fully broke in. Im going for my first oil change within the next few hundred miles.

I totally agree with darkturbo...I'm more of a conservative; especially with a piece of 30K machinery. My opinion...take the conservative approach and BE PATIENT!

Well thanks for the support on that everyone. I think you just want to slowly work your car into boost but dont just completely grandma it till like 1000 miles because my theory is the seals will maybe have problems once you do start really opening her up to high rpms. Just a theory though.

I agree with breaking it in slowly, but there are some people that say to lay into it day one. There is no real evidence supporting either, but I don't like to beat on my cars regardless, so I will stick to taking it easy
