17yr in NJ

Hi,
Recently I've been looking into an evo VIII, IX or MR. I'm 17 and looking for a car in the price range from about 16k-20k. I've been driving for about 1 year and half with no traffic violations of any kind. I drive my mom's mazda 3 and on occasion my dads old Sunbeam tiger, so I have a pretty good handle on powerful manual's. I think I drive pretty responsibly, especially with all the bad drivers in NJ.

So should I continue on my pursuit of an evo or succumb to the boring civic?

Thanks

LOL

you can handle a mazda 3 so you can handle an evo?

save yourself some money and dont crash an evo. crash the civic first.

ive owned 8 various turbo/modded high pow cars, done 4 drivers schools, and i can still scare myself with a mild bolt on evo.

If you have the responsibility and cash flow to maintain your own Evo then by all means do it. Might as well get something you like.

Not to be a dick, but if driving an Evo doesn't scare you then you should start with
something else. Learn to respect the car and it won't kill you. You're acing like a 17
year old kid with too much money. Don't end up like this kid who was a local to me.
Wrecked an Evo X the day he got it and was killed. Don't think it can't happen to you. http://www.wlfi.com/dpp/news/local/P...n-car-accident

You're too young to drive an evo, believe me. Pick a different car and practice from there.

Im 18 and have had the evo X for 3 years now.. Only thing I've hit was a curb so far knock on wood.... Just respect the car and make sure you have the money to maintain it like others have said. At times i regret buying the car because you have to be so careful with everything you do, and draws a lot of unnecessary attention especially at age 18... Don't fall into peer pressure and listen to friends who want to go fast... tell them to come to a track and let them go for a ride. tickets and dyeing is not worth the 5 seconds of fun...

I was fortunate enough to have an evo when I was 17 also. I've scared myself plenty of times when I first got it. Reality is, you are going to want to test the abilities of the car. You don't buy an evo to drive it like a minivan. Take it easy at first until you really learn how to control the car. Take it to an autocross event or road course if you really plan on pushing the car to its limits. Top three things I always remember and its kept me out of trouble (most of the time lol)..
1. DO NOT TRY TO IMPRESS YOUR FRIENDS!
2. EVOS ARE NOT INVINCIBLE!
3. THE CAR WILL OUT DRIVE YOU!

Other than that, enjoy the ride and be safe.

yes your right, every driver is different, i happen to have more experience and skill than 75% of people out there.

the evo has a great ability to ride that fine line between in control and out of control, a 17 yo who has drive a 150hp mazda will not know how to control a car with triple the horsepower, end of story, the experience just isnt there.

if you cant make YOUR evo scare you, YOU are the one that needs to learn to drive.

I take it you didnt read the last thread from a 17 year old? If you end up getting an evo drive slow, build your savings account to maintain it, dont attemp to work on it unless you REALLY know what your doin, study this forum constantly and dont get cocky like a subaru driver. Good luck!

only YOU know how responsible you are.

all "I" know is, when i was 17, i drove my pos civic like a total moron.
.. driving to fast
.. turning at high speed
.. cutting in an out of lanes

and im pretty sure if i had an evo, it would of been a lot worse, because i would have been going a lot faster on the corners and straightaways.

Best thing to do is buy something with less power, enjoy it, learn with it, and buy a faster car when you get older. You'll be smarter, and you're still young, so you still have plenty of fun ahead of you.

And all the older guys all know, no matter what you may say, as a 17 year old "You will break the law" lol

Hopefully whatever you decide to buy, hopefully you're responsible enough to take care of it.
