GR STi vs. EvoX

To start: Please no flames, or obvious statements. I know a fair amount about both of these cars, but for the life of me I cant make up my mind so I am just looking for some facts to help me decide. Mods if this is the wrong section, I apologize.

I am stuck between a GR STi and an EvoX. I would probably lean toward the MR trim because I do a lot of highway and that extra gear would be nice. No the car wouldn't stay stock, probably a full TBE and a protune would hold me over till the car was paid off. My understanding is Evo's are cheaper to make extremely quick, and the engines can hold a lot more power before popping (Boxer's infamous ringland issue which happens on both stock and 450whp sti's) however on the flipside the tranny's like to go on Evo's.

My wants needs are: Reliable DD, with better MPG than my 15-18 RX-8. AWD because I work in insurance claims so I drive in all sorts of fun weather year round. Once the car is paid off and I (hopefully) move up a few grades in terms of salary I have every intention on going full track for it, or even better, Rally!

Right now, I'm leaning towards the STi because I love the boxer rumble and it seems like a overall nicer car than the Evo. That being said if the Evo is going to be more reliable, and its obviously an equally capable platform I may go with it.

Do any of you MR owners regret going flappy paddle? How does it function with the day to day driving and even more important - with the mods?

Thanks!

I know, I know I'm sorry. I searched threads on iwsti and here and have put the same thread up over there. The only thing that makes it even a thought it that the Evo isn't 6 speed. I've even driven both and talked numbers on both and I can afford either car.

To tell you the truth what people think on here: they all say go for an evo.

**At the end of the day it's still your car so you decide man.

Sigh. I just need to take each one for like a week and see what I like more. Or get a used 07 Sti or Evo IX and go the cheaper route

I have an Evo (but it's a GSR, not an MR) and my sister has a GR STi, I've driven both plenty on the street, tracked both and autoxd the STi (going to first autox with the Evo tomorrow). So if you have any specific questions comparing the 2 I can answer them. But you didn't really asky anything specific...

I can't really give you an opinion on regular drivability cause you're looking at an MR... If it's GSR vs STi, I prefer the STi I it's never gonna see the track... But I'm not sure with the MR cause I never drove one... But street car that will see track duty I like the evo better, the slightly better streetability aren't worth the trade offs for me

Handling wise, the STi is like a sledgehammer and the Evo is like a scaple. The sti just pounds the road into submission whereas the evo carves threw it. I prefer the evo to the sti in this regaurd. The sti also has horrible understeer stock, enough to even get annoying in the street. A few mods fix it completely, GTWorx/RCE regular guy springs, power steering bushings, whiteline alk, rear diff and subframe inserts and all but the most extreme understeer is gone. Rife height is stock and ride quality is like a stock evo, just a hair firmer than a stock sti.

Let me know if you have any other questions

I drove a 2010 STi and was very underwhelmed. I'm told a good tune and some light suspension mods fixes the STi, but I don't want to blow a warranty. With the Evo its quick and nice off the bat, plus an exhaust is easy to swap. How much difference does the 5 speed vs 6 speed really make though? So much of driving is the true manual tranny I have in both my RX-8 and MazdaSpeed 3, I just need a more serious platform. My main dilema now is the trans.

If you wanna keep the warranty with the sti just get an AEM intake. It's carb approved so they can't legally deny warranty under the magnuson act or whatever. The intake really wakes up the car, but bone stock it's pretty pathetic, it falls flat on it's face after 5k. With the intake it's about on par with a stock evo... And gains a ton of power on the top end... She got the tune after the intake on her car, so I can't really say what it's like stock parts with a tune

I was in the boat looking at both... my evo X MR was a little more then the STI... and didnt have the navigation that I wanted... however I ended up getting the evo anyways... and since i just jumped and bought it.... i have fallen in love with the car... my girlfriend hates it because im constantly thinking about it. and washing it ( as she puts it) but seriously it is a kick *** car... its fast.. factory... ive only put 700 miles on it so far.. but it has been worth it

you need to make that decision on your own. Test drive both cars and see which one fits your needs or what you can afford.
