Z06 owner looking into Evos
Hey everyone,
Wanted to drop in and say hi. I'm new to this forum (and import cars for that matter), I'm 25 and live in Central Florida.
I currently drive a lightly modded C5 Z06, and really I love the car, but I'm looking for a change of pace. I drove my buddies 06' WRX and another friends 05' Evo and liked the cars.
Possibly looking into getting an Evo 8/9, but don't know for sure yet. Not a big fan of the look of Subarus (they just don't look good imo). So I registered here to get a feel of what to expect, what kind of mods are available, fattest tires I can shoehorn under the car, etc.
See you around and can't wait to learn some stuff.
Thanks

I was looking at getting a C6 Z06 myself. I'm a big fan of Vettes, but for practicality reasons I've never owned one. I decided to wait until at least winter when Corvettes are at their cheapest. My neighbor has a 402 C5 that sounds pretty sick.
C5 Z06's are cool, I would like to pick up one myself sometime in the next few years. Start by reading all the sticky's in the Evo Newbie and Evo General forums. There is a wealth of knowledge there that will answer most all your questions. The modding potential of these cars is absolutely enormous, the only limiting factor is your bank account.

Thanks for the warm welcome.
To answer a few questions, I would be selling or trading the Corvette as I don't have room for another car in the garage.
The Vette is alot of fun and just crazy fast with some light mods, but no back seats and "Corvette tax" on parts is making me look at alternatives.
To the guys looking at getting one in the future or just curious, check out corvetteforums, those guys know their stuff. Just make sure you read ahead on the maintenance for these things because a few 'simple' jobs can take many hours.
For instance, it took 3 days to change the bearings on the driveshaft. Yes, the driveshaft has bearings, and it is sealed in an aluminum torque-tube which requires the dropping of the entire drivetrain to replace. $60 part, 3 days of work. Go figure.....

I'm a member on the corvetteforums and have done quite a bit of reading. At the same time most of my car friends are muscle car owners. I know a couple people with Vettes so I'm decently familiar with some of the modifications and what they cost.
I will say the parts for an Evo aren't going to be much, if any, cheaper. The tires will be, but few other parts will. Every car has it's pros and cons.
There is this big feud between Muscle and imports for years, but they both have their weaknesses. I've heard plenty of muscle car guys talk about how easy it is to make power and act like their V8's are indestructible. And yes that's decently true (especially if you are using an LS motor), but that's only to a point. Then you either need to go nitrous or forced induction which can cost big bucks (well, not the nitrous). Then I've seen people tear up their built T-56's with 500whp (I know a guy personally who shattered his built tranny in a 408 Z28 running N/A. Then there is replacing half-shafts, lifter problems on 07 Z06's, etc.
With that said my built 2.3L has been running over 400whp for longer without breaking anything than I would say 75% of the local V8 owners I know (knock on wood it keeps going). That's not saying that they have bad cars. Just if you build Evos right you can push power out of them reliably for a long time. But just like any car, abuse can kill anything. Good luck on the search, sounds like whether you get an Evo or not you will be owning a cool car.
and the power thing.... naturally aspirated and on the stock bottom end these ls6's have put out 450-511rwhp on 93 pump. and with forced induction the sky's the limit, there is no replacement for displacement sorry if that hurts your feelings but it is true.

im going to really disagree with you here, you do realize that zo6's get 28-30 mpg on the highway (if you baby it and drive 70) because of the gearing, lighter more efficient drivetrain, and SUPERIOR aerodynamics. but i do agree that the evo is much more practical and comfortable.
