Evo Nub Seeks Advice.

Hello Everyone,

I am a subaru enthusiast who is at the moment very tempted to "defect" over to an evo.

I will be looking to aquire a charcoal Evo 8 or Evo 9 (MR preferred) with a max cost of around 19k.

Any common problems or other things I should watch for? Tips for a suby guy as to differences I should be aware of?

After checking out an Evo MR and an STi side by side I am really leaning towards the Evo. I am impressed with the 4G63 engine and the center diff of the Evo, as well as the ergonomics of the controls and the recaro seats.

Thanks in advance, please keep the flames to a minimum xD

If it's a commuter car the STI might be better because of cruise control. If you're looking for modding potential the Evo is probably the way to go

I think it would likely be tough to get a clean 9 (especially MR) for that price range. 05 would be very doable though.

The Evo isn't that bad of a commuter car to the point where the STI wins. I've daily driven mine to work and back since when I bought it brand new in early 2007, and it's never really been a problem. The only time it sucks is in lengthy bumper-to-bumper traffic, and in those scenarios, cruise control wouldn't do you any good. I'd really only want cruise control if doing a long trip (say, over 100 miles one-way), but other than that, it's not really needed. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't mind having it though.

I agree. That price range might limit your options to high-mileage examples, if you are shooting for an Evo IX.

So far it seems that the biggest difficulty in finding an Evo is find a clean titled one that doesn't break the bank.

Regarding the 5speed vs 6 speed, why is the 5 speed preferable? For me, the car would be daily driven and autocrossed.

I will admit that the lack of cruise is a concern because i do about one to two "long trips" a month. However, I have lived without it for years at this point.

The five-speed is a bit sturdier, but it's not really an issue unless you track your car (on an actual track, not an autocross course) or are pushing 400+ hp due to some fourth gear issues that pop up from time to time. Again, it's not as big of an issue as some people make it out to be for most Evo owners.

I do a ~200 mile trip about once a month to visit my family, and it's not as big of a deal as I thought when I first got the car. Every car before my Evo had it -- a 1995 Honda Accord, a 1994 Isuzu Rodeo, a 2000 Honda Civic and a 1998 Mercedes E320, to be specific. I don't miss it that much.
