General Problems with Evos? (02-06)

I tried searching, but couldnt find exactly what im looking for.

Im interested in an Evo, once I get the money for one.
I know the common problems with WRX and thats what shy me away from them. I also like the performance and looks of an Evo better.

What are the most common problems with the evos? From just minor 5-10 minute fixes to bigger issues (tranny, engine problems, check engine light etc.)

Thanks in advance!

Well aside from the clutch is the weakest link aside from the transfercase. I havent really heard many issues with the gearbox or with the rear diff enought to be stunned. I think thats when you get a decent amount of power from that and launching heavily without the transfercase being upgraded to handle the punishment.

In all fairness, the oem clutch is not all that bad. I have 68k miles on the same oem clutch and has gone through several seasons of autox and track days. To be honest though, I have only done maybe 2-3 actual hard launches on the evo ever. The thing is, these cars just werent designed to be drag strip cars.

Common issues and common things that break with abuse are two different things. One common issue with the evos is the hvac control knobs get hard to adjust and the mechanism behind the controls break. Common things that break with abuse are front diffs and transfer cases. The 6 speeds seem to be weaker than 5 speeds when abused.

Boost leakes are another common thing with these cars. I have never had to do such a regular boost leak testing routine on a turbo car,.

bump. also seriously considering getting an evo. I've been looking at evo issues for about 15 mins and found about 100 people saying the MR trannys blow out pretty easily.. and im sure as hell not going to drive like a grandma if I get one lol.
Any suggestions of upgrades you should preform on a stockish evo for track use? aside from clutch.

Depends on what you plan on doing with the MR. Usually to kill the 6 speed you need over 450 hp and a good amount of track time. My evo does about 20 track days a year TT/HPDE with 2 drivers and 362hp. My car gets no rest and has been beaten hard for 3 full seasons.

I'm just talking evos in general. Wouldn't mind getting an MR, but they might be a bit out of price range for me. Just basically looking for upgrades you normally wouldn't think of or come across that might be helpful. i.e. alot of people have said the tranny fluid gets overheated pretty quickly, so some have come up with coolers for it, or recomend aftermarket fluids ect.. things to that nature.
