Looking at a evo, basic questions
Hello all, I am again looking at a different evo. this one is a 03 with 93K on it. Clean title. The guy wants to trade for my srt 4. But says the evo grinds into 4th gear. supposably isnt a big grind and goes into gear every time. No pop outs etc, could go away with a tranny flush. Is there any common problems with the transmissions? Any fixes? what else should I watch for? he said it whines under de acel in 1st but said every evo does that. That true, or is the t case bad aslo? It looks pretty clean and taken care of for the most part. Hopefully I can get some good news and be the proud owner of a 03 Evo. But if its going to need a new trans or t case, I dont want to get it and just have to dump money into it, etc
id trade him an SRT4 if that evo had a blown motor. What is he thinking?
but , maybe it will go away with a fluid change, maybe he's dumping it before things get pricey. Who knows

If it just whines in first, you should be fine. I forgot what my friend told me why it whines in first though. Someone about first gear being a cone shape gear, different than the rest of the gears. He told me a lot of cars have and does this. I (or my friend) could be wrong on this though.
If he's still on the stock clutch, you'll be looking at some money to replace it. Another thing is you have 27k miles to go before the 120k maintenance. The 4th gear grind could be a bad synchro. Sure, it might shift into gear just fine but it will get worse and soon, you won't be able to go in that gear. You would have to baby that 4th gear if you want it to last but I highly suggest getting it fixed.

i would do it, the srt4 isnt worth as much imo.
ask him about what maintenance he's done. if its still on stock clutch. i know you will have to do the 100k. a tranny fluid flush will only hide the problem, your synchro might be going out.

Yeah he said the stock clutch was just replaced at 90K with another OEM clutch. How much do you think it would be for the syncro to be replaced? On my srt it wasn't bad. Like $320 and the gear set comes out of the side of the trans. But I'm not sure how the evo's would work. Would the whole trans need to be replaced? Could you shoot me some pricing on how much my options would be. Thanks again.
I know from experience the syncros going bad isn't fun. That got so annoying and a pain so fast. The 3rd gear one went out in my srt 4 last year.
As for maintence he said he has done everything current oil changes t case changes etc. clutch replaced at 90K and the 60K was all done.

your best bet would be to take it to a reputable evo shop in your area and have them figure out if its the synchros or what and they can give you a price quote. every shop charges different, but i found that anything tranny/t-case related is expensive. maybe have him drive u around and show u the 4th gear grind.

Trade the srt4 for the evo, like everyone else said the srt4 isn't worth as much. If syncro is grinding it's bad. And its far from $320 to replace. Sounds like a decent dea thou....
Good luck

Yeah he is going to be letting me test drive it and such. Maybe I'll ask him to let me take it to map and have them look at the car and tell me before I make a decision. I just put 4 more K into the srt for summer fun. Don't wanna throw it all away and be stuck with a problem full car.
I would make the trade happen before he changes his mind lol. First thing to check after you get your new Evo is to check the transmission slave cylinder for leaks and re-bleed. That's all it could need if the clutch was just replaced. Maybe the shop doing the work might have not bleed the system right if they disconnected the slave cylinder. It's good to think of the worst case to see if your ready to deal with a big problem.
Okay well I *tried* getting info from the previous owner but it's so hard to deal with kids that get everything they want through mommy and daddy. I'm just going to assume the clutch was never replaced since the kid is such a dick about it. Plus why would you replace the pressure plate and flywheel and not the disk? Sounds shady to me.. What do you guys think?

I don't absolutely need a evo just really want. But I'm not going to get ****ed over by some kids. Hence why I'm asking for all your help/opionions

Take some time to read though the forum, look at folks' past threads and it won't be such a hard decision. Have you seen what replacement drivetrain parts go for? Do you have any confidence in the beatboy who owned it before? If you want an Evo, buy a good one to begin with. It'll cost you a lot less in the longrun, not to mention the aggravation, the negativity in your marriage, etc. No joke.
