EVO people help me

Hello everyone, please dont tell the members at NASIOC I am here lol.

Lately I have been regretting buying my 03 wrx, because an EVO 8 has always been my dream car. My goal was to get an AWD(weather safe) vehicle with good mpg So i can survive during the summer, but ever since I made my purchase, I regret it every time I drive because i wanted an evo. The only thing that kept my from purchasing an evo was the fact that It gets 16mpg city. My wrx gets 21+ city( i never go over 3k and granny drive), so im here for your advice.

What do you guys get for mpg? is 16mpg true?

Are there mods that improve your mpg? I know on a subaru when going aftermarket turboback mpg increases by 1-2 and I have witnessed this myself.

How reliable are evos, I always hear the rumor that evo's STAY in the shop.. I only plan on lowering and getting a nice muffler.

What kind of engine managment is available for evos? For a subaru I need a AccessPort (500$) which is NEEDED for tuning for every MOD i add. Are evo's similar?

Any major issues with an evo that I should be aware of ?

Whats the difference between the MR, RS, BASE models? I was told its just a extra 6 speed transmission..

Please dont bash me you guys and help me make the right decision. If you feel like I should keep the wrx due to reliability/ good mpg then please be honest.

Edit: This is what im currently looking to purchase.

Eh. I guess it really depends. My gas milage isn't terrible, but I have never cared to measure it. I fill up about once a week. Driving to work everyday, plus your extra activities after work.

I got 21 beating on it here and there

You can tune it, and exhaust and all, Never really modded a car for mpg. Most mod it for power.

How reliable are evos, I always hear the rumor that evo's STAY in the shop.. I only plan on lowering and getting a nice muffler.
Well if it's done right it can last extremely long, just have to keep up with maintenance, Just dont hack job it and it will be fine. exhaust and lowering is nothing for these cars. Some people push 400-500hp daily driver on stock block.

What kind of engine managment is available for evos? For a subaru I need a AccessPort (500$) which is NEEDED for tuning for every MOD i add. Are evo's similar?
Evo's most common tuning software is stock ecu, with a tune, a tactrix cable is around 100-150$ and a wideband and thats all you need. Except to have someone who knows how to tune do it. around 3-500 for a dyno tune. estimate

Any major issues with an evo that I should be aware of ?
Depends on the years, but nothing really major wrong with evo's. The transfer case death whine is one that worries most.

Whats the difference between the MR, RS, BASE models? I was told its just a extra 6 speed transmission..
Mr is 6 speed(some don't like it because power capabilities, some have it and holding strong)
RS is the light weight base model, roll down windows, no abs, door handles and mirrors arent painted, and few more things
And the BASE is really the rs. But the gsr and normal evo are just 5 speeds. I believe in 04 and up have acd. The differential control, some like it, some get rid of it

Please dont bash me you guys and help me make the right decision. If you feel like I should keep the wrx due to reliability/ good mpg then please be honest.

Everyone is here to help, just use the search buttom sometimes before you ask a question and you wont get bashed. If the evo is the car you dreamed of getting GET ONE. You wont forget it. The mod bug comes quick tho, Just make sure maintenance was done and you'll love the car

I full up once a week and i drive a lot. Mpg is not to bad reall, i love my car so filling it up does not bother me to much. so if you really want a evo dont let the gas be the thing that keeps you from it. get a tune and enjoy it.

If you're concerned about mpg, don't buy an Evo lol. My suggestion would be something more practical if gas is one of your main concerns, especially if you plan to mod.

Do a search on evoM there are plenty of threads that cover info for new and potential buyers.

You can read this, which covers the info on the different models etc.

Good luck.

Agreed. Open with, "please dont tell the members at NASIOC I am here." Don't buy an Evo. Come to the Evo forum to tell us how our cars live in the shop - don't buy one. Shift at 3K for fuel economy and only plan on lowering - don't buy one. Can't read the forum stickies that explain the model designations - don't buy one. Thinking of a 9 year old modded/de-modded Evo with the concerns at hand - don't buy one. Best of luck with the WRX.

actually im buying one, the opening sentence was a joke, im asking about rumors not telling you how your cars live in the shop, the way i wanna drive it and plan on modding it is my decision and shouldn't affect whether or not i should buy an evo or not.

Thank you all for the help, i guess since this has been a dream car gas shouldnt b a concern.

In that case, we can look forward to many more threads coming our way.

Admittedly, your comments piqued my curiosity and it's a slow day:

Will you own both the WRX and the Evo you claim to be buying? I'm asking, because your posts/threads on the Subaru board (one uploaded just today) point to different direction. Too, why would the folks on NASIOC get upset, when your first post there appeared 8 whole days ago?

Then an appropriate, non-inflammatory question would read, "How reliable are Evolutions?" I hear rumors about the Moon being made of Green Cheeze, but you don't see me posting about it globally, expecting folks to argue against my claim.

You asked Evo owners for advice. The car is a slug below 3K and its suspension doesn't really lend itself to lowering. If that's what you want, this is not the car for you.
