Newbie with an E46 M3
Newbie with an E46 M3
Hey guys,
Figured i'd make an introduction on here after lurking around trying to absorb knowledge in the Evo world. I'm from Canada, currently driving a 2001 BMW M3 Convertible that I picked up last summer from California.
Now you may be wondering why a BMW guy is hanging around here, and well - i'll try and keep it simple. I'm thinking of selling my car next spring/summer, and the Evo 9 MR currently has my interest.
It's not that I don't like my M3, I absolutely love it. However, like all things - it has it's flaws, and i'm currently trying to weigh out what i'm really looking for in a car.
My M3 isnt a slouch, but it's not fast by any stretch. What I find it doesn't have in speed (comparability) it makes up for in looks and luxury - However, I'm not currently sold that I need that luxury right now in my life.
A few other flaws i'm currently looking at closely right now, is AWD vs RWD, and bolt-on mods/tuning. The E46 unfortunately has next to no inexpensive mods inwhich you can gain much for your dollar, nor can you tune it. Of course you can supercharge it (Minimum 7k entry price), or even turbo charge it (Minimum 15k, Horse Power Freaks turbo with stand alone ECU) - But I just can't justifying spending that type of money on a car a single power mod that has no resale value.
As for-mentioned, the AWD vs RWD - After taking a drive in my friends WRX STI, I really want that kind of fun in my life, unfortunately there is no german car equivalent to either the STI or Evo.
If I do sell and move onto an Evo, there are things I will miss - Such as a very comfortable cruise, I gather the Evo will be similar to the STI I rode in, which seemed harsh compared to my M3, although what can you really expect from a Rally inspired street legal race car.
Aside from the power-train, turbos, AWD and simple fast fun - One thing that really excites me is tuning. My greatest hobby is to tinker with electronics, especially computers. I currently love using various BMW software I have acquired to flash different modules to euro spec, change how lights and buttons function, etc - However you simply can't change anything engine related. I look forward to the giant learning curve of engine/turbo tuning.
This is starting to sound long winded so i'm going to wrap it up. Either way, it's nice to get to know you guys as I try and make a decision on whether to keep my M3, or sell it can pick up an Evo9 or something else. Heres a few pictures of my ride encase anyone was wondering.

As you stated before the Evo is not to comfortable for DD, but a lot of people like me use it for DD, the car is loud, mpg suck (expect 15mpg-17mph), noisy, tranny is notchy, and turning radius is worst than the srt-4 that I had, but the car is a blast to drive. Its fast, steering response is amazing its like nothing ive ever driven. About maintenance I guess its no more than maintaining a BMW M3 now is it? If you do decide to go for you wont regret it.
