2006 Evo 9 MR... to buy or not to buy?
2006 Evo 9 MR... to buy or not to buy?
Like the title says... to buy or not. The MR has a damaged title due to a rear-end accident. But only 52k miles and is flawless. Priced at $14k.
Help me decide all on reliability, common problems, overall drive-ability and up-coming maintenance.
--The vehicle will be used as a daily driver.
--I don't plan on any mods.
Also, what to look for or listen for during a test drive will be helpful.
The Evo has been repaired to factory. It was in an accident in 2006 with only 4k miles, then it was repaired and has been driven since and has about 52k miles. The body repair looks excellent, however there are a few imperfections in the vicinity of the accident, but none else then visual. Interior is clean. The guy selling said sometimes the CE light comes on and he pulled a code and its due to a P0420 code <----- Any other possibilties it may be? Thoughts?
I used to have a 2011 STI, but wanted to get out of the loan. Now that I have the money to pay up front, I just want to pay it off first hand. I drove the 06 MR last night and it seems to handle better and have more power then the 2011 STI. However I just want something that will be a good DD.
I'm just concerned on all the terrible things I hear with the motor and tranny on the EVO's. Not having a warranty or something to fall back on especially with the cost of repair on one of these. So I want to know what other peoples thoughts are.
It'll be a DD, 100% stock. Ive never owned one before.
Info on me: I live in North Dakota, therefore the AWD makes sense. The weather is so unpredictable up here its ridiculous.
Also, I'm looking at a 2001 Integra Type R, 97k miles and priced at $9k for me.
**In advance thanks for the advice and thoughts. I will take all into consideration.**

First of all whoever told you about the "horrible" things about the evo drivetrain, that/those people are fools, quit hanging out with them. If i am afraid of anything I would be scared of the 2.5L boxer engine and the ringland failures. 4g63 engine has been around forever and the evo9 has the best of them all (MIVEC, bigger turbo, the whole pckg. and in this case the MR has more cool gadgets). As for the 6spd, it hasnt been proven to be the strongest ONLY when beaten on it, BUT i know a lot of people that have high mileage on their 6spd. If you know how to drive a manual ad not beat on it constantly you should be fine.
As for the accident, I am not a big fan of rebuilt titles, for a few reasons. The main is that you cannot get a loan (in this case you got cash), cannot get a full coverage from any insurance companies and most importantly depending on the accident the car may never drive the same . If the preavious owner has some kind of pictures, I would see how bad of an accident it was
, but he has driven it for 52k miles with no issues so that looks like a good thing there.
The P0420 is catalyst efficiency fault, cat could be damaged or hollowed out. Not a big issue, replace the cat or remove it.
Since you paying cash, I say offer him less money. Good Luck.

He started his price at $17,500
I got him down to $14k...
It's either the evo or a 2001 integra type r jdm front end with 97k miles... Clean title, $5k less. I would mildly build and boost.
Pros and cons to both vehicles.

I HATE Hondas, and the only thing i see a honda as is a gas saving rattle can..no offense to the honda lovers. The Evo and Honda are not close to being in the same page even the Type R. A normal person or even a somewhat a car person would not knoe the diffrence of Type R versus normal Integara..go to autozone and you can get a Type R sticker for $5. Evo all the way and for $14k get it then come and talk to us ho wmuch you love it
Yo want to know pros and cons on both vehicles? Honda = CONS ALL OVER oh yeah its a FWD vs AWD Evo. The only pros for the Hundaaaa is the MPG..you will get 35mpg no problem.

My Evo IX is at 91k and the only issue I've ever had was throttle bodies sticking. Very reliable, starts up every time, handles amazing in the snow. If you aren't worried about the accident I would tell him to get the 60k service done before you buy it, (just one less thing youll need to worry about).
well the fact that the previous owner drove it for 53k miles thats a pretty good validation there. I say run a quick carfax on it for $35, and take it to a well known body shop so they can check it out for a piece mind, slide the guy $100 or so. For $135 you will know for sure if the car is right. I would rather loose $135 then get a nightmare, but like i said the fact he has been driving it for that long it shows to be legit. the carfax will show you if he has been honest about everything.
I have a 9 mr. Drag raced, autox, and driven like it was stolen for 43k. I had no issues with the 6sp and swapped it for a 5 at 43k. My front diff housing finally crack after a bad launch a few weeks ago. But still drove it home. I've had no electrical issues and no random noises due to factory parts. I have squeky bushings in the back but they are whiteline not oem.
Other then checking compression, shaftplay, and doing a really thorough chassis inspection in the rear for bent frame or crappy welds and such i would say go for it.
As for service. Its not at 60k yet but it is 7 years old. So knock out a 60k service and change all the fluids immediately. Just to cover your ***.

they are #1 stolen because people can do so veeeery easily thats why, plus OEM honda parts are super expensive also, they are not stolen because they are the best thing since slice bread. Plus only the older hondas are easier to steal, no newer ones get stolen.
I am curious to know, in which way is honda a better car?
