Newbie driver would like some manual driving advice.

Hey fellow evo owners
Well i drive a 2003 evo 8 its pretty much stock i bought it about 1 month ago and this is my first manual car.
Well my driving has improved alot since ive gotten it but i still have some troubles such as i cant take off from a stop quick enough unless i do like a baby launch which i know isnt good for the clutch, if i try to do it faster i usually end up stalling ugh..and my shifting is only smooth 50% of the time. Anyone have any advice, tips, techniques that can help me out with this??? or is it just practise, practise, practise?

Well thanks fellas!

When I was a little kid I used to sit in the car and slowly let out the clutch while slightly pushing the gas pedal while the car was off. Apparently it worked fairly well since I never struggled with a manual transmission.

Practicing is the only way you are going to get better at it. Eventually you will get to the point where you can get the car moving completely without touching the gas.

yeah, if you clutch, put in gear, let off clutch slowly the car will start pulling forward, balance giving it gas and releasing clutch at the same time. you'll get it. keep practicing you'll be fine.

let me help.

1. just seat in the car and start it.

2. once the car is started, remove your leg off the clutch, brakes and gas pedal.

3. ( make sure the car is on a flat area where it will not move if the Hand brake is down) NOW let the hand brake down. ( the car will not move if the area is flat)

4. now push the clutch in and put the car in first gear and hold the clutch in. ( your right leg should be relax and NOT on the brake pedal.

5. Now release the clutch little like you are trying to see how slow you can move your leg without anybody noticing you are moving your leg. ( half way out) the car will start to move.

6. you will notice or feel the car starting to move. STOP by pushing the clutch back in again. (Back to 5.)

No gas pedal at all and Brake pedal only if you are going too fast.

ENJOY>

also, when coming to a slow, you should put it in 2nd and go. you dont need to go to 1st. example. 4th gear cruising to a right turn, neutral, slowdown to a slow roll, start your right turn, put in 2nd and then gas.

Trying to shift smooth in an Evo is about impossible, if you are half smooth - good enough. Select the next gear and get off of the clutch fairly quickly. You clutch will love you.

Moderate take-offs in a stock Evo will always produce an rpm sag. Learn to live with it. The car in stock configuration is not quick off of the mark.
