I haven't had ANY reliability issues with mine (365/375tq) and i bought it brand new. There are a few members here that have anywhere from 150 to 300k miles with no issues.OP...don't listen to anyone that has a statement like this. A stock or near stock Evo will be plenty reliable if the previous owner has taken care of it. Same with a stock subaru. Now if you're looking for max hp, Evo no question.
You came to an Evo forum to ask this question...
Had both a GD STi and an VIII. Prefer the VIII in every way except the gauge cluster. can't go wrong either way. Hardest part is finding a good clean one with good history.

There was a thread awhile back comparing Evos/STI's. Sooo here we go again:
I obviously have an Evo and mine happens to be an 05, boyfriend had an 04 STi. While I will basically admit the STi has an amazing sound, that's pretty much where my love for them stops. I believe the 05's have suspension issues (I know for a fact the 04's do). The struts go on those things like no other, they don't handle very well either. The Evo handles 5x better than any STi I've been in. The seats are not comfortable compared to ours. Everybody that sits in my seats front or back end up falling asleep or comment on how comfortable they are and how they would be able to do road trips with me because of it. The only thing I did like a little better than our cars was the gauges, they were very nice. Our engines are a lot stronger than those too. I loved his before he blew the motor (which seems to happen with every STi owner I know) and it was fun to drive but the Evo takes the win on this one.

My friend got a 07 sti put intake on it, throw's codes like mad, put exhaust on it Boost creep like a ****. I tuned it for the intake & exhaust and no codes except the boost creep issue still...
I'd say go with the Evo hands down less issues.

Take notice on how you said that "few" members have had no issues from 150k to 300k. I am not saying the STI or Evo's fall apart easily, but I would not stick them in the reliable category . It's just better to let the rookie know what he is getting himself into, without giving him any false hope.
To the OP, if you want a reliable car get a toyota or honda.
evo all day, if I left my 8 stock I would not have had any issues for sure.
Just as an example a buddy of mine was looking for a clean 04 sti.
Found one with 50ish k miles and the thing ran great completely stock.
Leak down was **** with compression very low in cylinders 2 and 4.
If you buy an STI used leakdown/compression test or do not buy.

Its been covered before. Neither cars are considered very reliable by the average person. They have their small issues that while they are common on our cars, it scares most people. The Evo is loud, quick, and fun to drive. Same with the Subaru. However, sometimes you hear about the evo transfer case issues. In most cases, this is caused by some young *** hat that shouldn't be driving it in the first place because they don't know what they are doing.
I worked at a subaru performance shop for about a year. They are JUNK! as far as the stock engine is concerned. At least once a week I got a call asking how much for a rebuild. People left and right would blow the ring lands in these cars. keep in mind that these were all different cases:
Various ages of drivers, both young and old.
Many different driving styles, anywhere from punk kid driving to tracking to light daily driving.
Various years and models including the wrx, sti, legacy, forester and so on.
different tunes as well. Stock tune, cobb tune, full out pro tune, everything.
You get my gist.
The only real pro to having a sti is the exhaust note that sounds so mean. But with a nice exhaust setup on the evo with some cams and a proper tune, your evo can sound amazing.

On this forum the evo wins out and on the subaru forums the sti's will get the nod. It's all a matter of preference, but I would say that evo's handle better right out of the box and have stronger engines. Not that evo engines don't grenade but I heard of plenty of horror stories about suby engines on how crappy their pistons are.
It's all relative.
For a car enthusiast? The evo is a reliable car if you don't go overboard with power mods or tinker under the hood too much (VTA BOVs w/ MAF or other dumb stuff...)
For the average car owner whose extent of maintenance is just adding fuel and changing out air fresheners.....the Evo and STi is the equivalent of maintaining a Leer jet.
Honestly, out of all of the cars I've owned, the my Evo has been the most reliable (4 BMWs, 2 Volvos, Mustang, VW beetle, Chevy half-ton, Ford Lightning and now Evo).
Not only that, but I've raced the crap out of it way more than my old BMW 330ti and Ford Lightning without any problems (other than brake pads!). Well..I did have the radiator spring a leak at the seams last year. If that's the worst thing that happens in my ~80K miles of ownership, I'll take it!!!
Original owner. 82K miles. ~350whp/340wtq (on VD dynojet setting) ~175 passes at the strip, over 35 Autox events, and I've cruised it at 100-105mph (4-4.5K RPMS) on the Autobahn a couple of times a week for the past couple of years. Never left me stranded, never broke a part that wasn't a wear item (except for radiator) and it never saw the dealership..not once (but that was because I don't trust them).
The other Evo owners I've known over the years that have kept their Evos on Stock turbos and under 400hp have had the same experience as me. The ones that seem to have problems are the guys that are wanting big power or bought a
3rd/4th owner evo with a questionable past.
IMHNSO, the Evo is very reliable for a sports oriented car.
