Decided to get an EVO 9, please give me your honest advise.

So I'm in the process of parting out my RSX Type S, and I've decided on getting an Evo 9. I've done some reading on the car, and found out about a little problem with the transfer case. Is there anything else i should look for?
Another thing, should i look for a bone stock evo 9? or one built by a reputable tuner?
considering they're around the same price range.

here are some evos i'm interested in:

Bone Stock:

They all look very nice. I like the stock one , I didn't realize that a 06 still fetches mid $20 k.

yea, up around here they do. Almost anything under $20k has problems with it, or the seller really needs money(Rare).

Any advice on which would be best, and why?

Welcome! I would say its ultimately up to you where in the evo spectrum you want to start. With that said, if it was me I would go with one of the two lower mileage cars as they all are in the same ballpark money-wise. And as I have learned from reading many posts on this forum about this sublect, find out as much info as you can about car, mods, tuner/shop. They all appear to be in good shape, but it will never hurt to contact the owner or shop that wretched on the car. Good luck, it's an exciting time looking for and picking up your evo! I love mine even more 4 yrs into ownership!

I can lean both ways, one I like stock because you can do the mods that you like and maybe less abuse on the engine. I'm not saying that just because its stock it wasn't abused, for all you know it could of been modded and then returned to stock? Then one side of me likes the modded one with the built engine as long as it was built by a reputable place, then you can have some piece of mind that it will last. But just like anything ,wether its stock engine or built its all about the tune on it.

Lol, I'm excited. I love the RSX, but its time to move on to bigger and better things. I've had my eye on the Evo 9 for a while now, it's grown on me. Lol thank you for the advice. Anything in particular i should look for when i go to see it?

They all look pretty nice, I myself like a bone stock evo they're hard to find now a days but the modded ones look pretty clean and some have lower mileage which is nice. All the prices seem reasonable to me, pretty much what your gunna pay for a clean 8/9 in the northeast. I picked up my 9 mr for $25k w/ only 12k miles on it a year and a half ago. I'd find out if any of them where winter driven or kept outside cuz the only issue I had with mine was my struts being rusted out and I had to replace both front strusts after blowing my struts hitting a pot hole. Good luck tho man!

About the transfer case, there isn't really an issue with them, they're better described as the weak link in the drivetrain. They're usually only prone to failure when the car has been abused, otherwise you shouldn't have to worry about them. The problem I would say is the cost of replacement. Here are a few things I would look for when buying an evo:

A whine that increases with speed, often changes with on/off throttle (transfer case)
Crunching/grinding gears (transmission synchros, maybe just bad clutch adjustment but could've already done some damage)
Lack of smoothness at WOT (bad tune, incorrect parts or incorrectly installed)

They all look very nice. When I was in the market for one, I looked into Cosmo, they seem to specialize in selling Mitsubishi, Subaru etc and they go off the lot fairly quickly. Bone stock is nice especially if u got your own plans. Just make sure for the price, look for signs if the car was modded and put back to stock. I picked mine up with light and basic mods, didn't wanna spend that much into buying my own parts. Choice is your and again they all look pretty nice.

With the heat shield on the "Stock" one being stripped of paint I would suggest looking at nuts and bolts on the car to make sure it wasn't put back to stock.

You might want to make sure that car has had the 60k timing belt service done to it since it is sitting at 69,xxx miles.

Message or call HIS Motorsports and you may be able to find out more about the car. They look over most if not all of Cosmo's Evos if I am not mistaken.

In all honesty I dont know much about the trim levels, and what wikipedia has to offer. From what i got from reading up is the weak 6th gear on the 6 speed mr.

Aside from what wikipedia has to offer what are the pros and cons of getting a mr rather than another trim level?

The MR's came with bilstein shocks, aluminum roof and fenders, bbs wheels and 6 speed.

That's what I could think of as the major differences.

I've read that the 6 speed is weaker than the 5spd so it depends on what your ultimate goals are for the car.

I believe the MR model is the most produced/common model for the IX's as well
