Depreciating Evos
Depreciating Evos
Been saving up for years now, hoping the prices for evos would drop, they kind of went up over the years, but now are staying sideways if anything slowly dropping.
Anyone know if the prices will be dropping anytime soon? I'm kind of hesitant to make any purchase because usually when I go and buy things they end up dropping in price.
like a black rainy cloud that keeps following me.
Not too sure if I should just save up more and just get a mark IV supra. One thing I've noticed is even the markIV Supras are slooowly depreciating also. What's going on? Are gasoline engines of the past now? Any input would be nice to aide me in my decision.
I also don't think an evo will maintain its price like a supra. I know it got fast and furious spotlight, but I just don't see an evo having the shine a supra does. Ima 4g63 guy at heart so I'm not hating. Just IMO.

Is this an Evo vs. Supra thread 'cause they're totally different cars, but let me get out my crystal ball real fast and tell you what's going to happen with their private party value...
It's a popular vehicle that for under $30k has amazing out of the box performance and in the right hands on a track can keep up with other cars several times its value.
If you want a drag car, get a Supra and put your mind at ease.

It seems like you were hinting at a supra vs evo comparo at the end. I love supras, but i also feel they are very overated. You cant compare a rwd I6 to a rally sedan. Evos can keep up with supras and even beat them in straight line perormance, in every other category the evo trumps it, except for the rarity/collector aspect.

I brought up the supra because the resale values on them have stayed up where they were if you go back 10 years ago. I know people who bought an mkiv supra and abused it hard, threw thousands of miles on it and then sold it for much more than he bought it for ... I could have brought up an AE86 or even an fd rx7 in terms of resale value. I know these cars have mass media appeal, but they've holdup pretty well in terms of resale value.
I hope people get what I'm asking here. I guess it's the rare collector thing about it...
Well after retreading my first post I kinda see what you mean. I just threw the supra in there because the price range is somewhat close together. I guessed I could have compared to a 993 Porsche also, but that's a little too outta my price range.

Cars are never a smart investment.
Take the limited production Integra Type-R only imported in 1998, 2000 & 2001 with about 3000 cars imported each year. The cars are numbered so you can tell just how limited they are. That did not prevent their value from going down, even as they were regularly wrecked, stolen and the like.

the only time the CT9A value would have significantly dropped is when the new evos came out, but it didn't.. i expect prices for a typical evo to more or less hold steady, or drop at a relatively low % per year. I checked the KBB of my car not very long ago - still 27-28k for the condition it's in.
I think they will retain their value over the next 10 plus years....mainly because they have a following....that should keep their value up. Sure, there will be some depreciation of course....but I still think they hold quite a bit of resale in the near future.
EVO 8/9s I have a feeling are going to hold there value. I bought my black car over 4 years ago for $24K out the door with 49k miles on it. Fast forward to last year when I was looking for the same car again in white. The one I was going to buy sold on me and the car sold for $25,500 with 51k miles on it.
I wouldn't sit around and wait for these cars to drop in value, clean and in good shape ones will be worth a lot of money one day and will hold in value.

^+1 The 8/9 will hold value. Some cars like the NSX have jumped in value in the last few years. Not saying that will happen for these Evos, but there is a big following for these cars and the only way I see clean ones dropping in value is if the whole economy tanks and deflation occurs on every level.

Maybe in the future when I am in need of a 4/5 passenger car.
