Dude, the 2004 models just came out, it will be at least another 10 months before the 05 models come out. Also since changed the Lancer for the 04 model year, it's likely nothing will change for the 05 models.

what about HP do you ever think the basic lancer will go from like 120 to maybe 140 or 148?

b/c 120 is just too slow to keep up in todays like normal car, like every car is above 130 it seems.

I think the should add an extra hampster to the engine then we will really fly. I really am beging to think our engines are really run by hampsters really. I mean its not to far fetched i belive a hampster could out run my car somtimes. really. Soon I am going to ad hampster food to the gas tank and see if I get any noticable gains on the butt dyno. anyone know what hampsters eat????

There's no incentive for to change the engine. They offer so many different options right now that there's something for everyone. The basic ES with different additions for the rest of the models. Someone wanting more will go for the Ralliart. With the release of the new Mazda 3, however, might rethink what they are doing. The competition is getting really stiff.

I think in order to not let the Mazda 3 cut into sales they will need to up the hp of this engine. This could probably be doing with a change in timing or some other slight engine tweak. They will have to do something now that I look at it because the 3 is at 148/135. It's going to own H-Stock in autocross.

Why does an economy car need more than 120 hp? If you're thirsty for HP go ahead and get the ralliart. If you're really in the need for speed then go ahead and get the evolution. Really no need for Mitsubishi to come up with another engine for the base economy model when they're already not making much money on the Lancer line. They'd rather much concentrate on the Eclipse line up.

exactly what i was thinking. i was told the 04 ES has the same 120hp engine as the 02-03 ES/OZ engines correct? its the base economy model, i dont think mitsu will waste time/money developing a new engine.

Who says they will develop a new engine? That is deifinitely not going to happen. I was stating they could make some small changes to the current engine to get a few extra ponies out of it. They could do this by putting decent software in the ECU for one, so we wouldn't need the piggyback.

The premise behind the budget line is to give people an affordable car and give them incentive enough to upgrade later. It creates a brand loyalty. My dealer told me this directly. The sales volume is what they want, not the money. The money comes from the upper models like the Eclipse, EVO, Montero, etc.

Just is a very lucrative word when it comes to the automotive industry. You don't just come out with a new engine. They do have a DOHC Lancer, it's called the Evolution. If they came out with a DOHC base Lancer, they would have to develop a brand new engine. There's no incentive for them to do that since they already have a decent SOHC engine out. Some retuning would get them the hp numbers people would want to see in order for them to compete with the newer cars coming out.

i never said was. anyways....i was just agreeing with JohnMemorialHS, theres no need to develop a new engine or for that matter even tweak the current one. if you want more hp, the ralliart is always available.

What is it with everyone? Buyer's remorse or something? 120hp is fine. I've not had too many problems. I don't know if everyone bought a Lancer to drag race and then went "oh ****" when they started driving it or what. It's the bottom line - if you wanted more hp, you probably should've bought a different car. You bought the Lancer for a reason - why change your mind all of a sudden?
