STi launch

Why does it seem like the sti launches so much better than an evo? It's almost like there launch is rocket like when the Evos have a tiny lag, even though they usually end up winning.

Driver mod. Slip the clutch more when reving up about to take off. If done right you will smell your clutch burn and have a ridiculously hard launch i choose not to do this though, as it will ruin a clutch over time.

Just like the guy above me said it's the driver doing it. Not the car.

Oh ok. It just always seems they launch better i thought it had to do with their awd.

But it makes no sense. Even on videos where the Evos completely annihilates an sti, the sti still launches like a rocket!

The STi is a little less dependent on the active center because it has a rear-biased planetary center, while we have a spider-type center. Of course, if the center locks hard enough to prevent any slip, whether the center was natively a 50/50 or 35/65 (or whatever they changed it to) doesn't really matter any more.

I just wanted to validate your post. Scooby went planetary in the center something like 15 years ago, while Mitsu stayed with a spider-type. The only Mitsu that I know of that ever had a planetary center was the 3000GT VR4, but it wasn't very aggressive ... only about 45/55, IIRC.

Note that we do have a planetary rear in the X, but it's a 50/50. They use a planetary to double the effect of the AYC.

I knew something was up. It can't possibly be just the driver when it seems far more often than not an sti can outlaunch an evo, atleast till about 30-45mph. Thanks for informative response.

You're welcome. And I looked it up. After pinheads kept crashing the original STi, Scooby backed off the center to 42/58. Autocrossers greatly prefer the 35/65, but autocrossers, in general, are better-than-average drivers and don't freak out when the car gets loose.

When you say 35/65 do you mean 35rear/65front? Where does the Evos 50/50 and front bias come as an advantage over the rear bias?

Nope. Other way around. The early STis were 35 front, 65 rear, such that the torque distribution matched the weight distribution on a hard launch. But 65% rear is a bit much at corner exit and lots of people crashed, so they backed it off to 42/58 after two or three years.

Our center diff is a spider type, so it has to be 50/50. Thus, we are more dependent on the ACD to lock and send more torque to the rear on a hard launch to avoid front-wheel spin. If you launch a powerful Mitsu on drag tires, without some reprogramming of the ACD, you will spin the fronts a bit.

Could be worse. Could be in a powerful 2G DSM with the silly VC limited-slip center. I could spin the fronts on any tires in that car. Cusco makes a 35/65 center for DSMs, but it was expensive and I sold the car, instead.
