3S Member, Looking for a new DD
3S Member, Looking for a new DD
Hey Everyone.
I've been a member on the 3S forums for several years now with my '91 3000GT VR4 project car. I've stopped by EvoM several times over the years and picked up some good information.
Anyways, I'm looking to trade out my stock '96 GSX for an Evo IX MR. As expected they are hard to come by in stock or low-mod form. I've searched all the usual places (Cars, Autotrader, Craigslist, Ebay) with only a few hits.
I hope to have better luck in the EvoM Classifieds and am excited to join the EvoM community.
Any tips for my search other then be patient?

No issues with driving if a good candidate is found.
Anyone have a few minutes to give me the cliff notes on 5spd vs 6spd strengths & weaknesses? I'll start digging through the drivetrain forums in my free time.
I don't plan to do any major mods. Likely just max out the stock turbo to 93-octane limits. I have the 3000gt for my high HP toy. Just looking for a nice DD with a little pep.
In the 3S world drag guys prefer 5-spd and AutoX guys go for 6spds.
5spd:
- Taller Gears
- 45, 80, 126, 169, 211mph vs 6spd 43, 75, 115, 156, 195, 243mph
- '91-'92.5 had smaller 18-spline output shaft '92.5-'93 got 25-spline (300M shaft available for 18 & 25-spline)
- Weaker cast aluminum t-case (Braces available that are good into 11's 1/4 mile, SS and Billet 6061 cases recommended past that)
6spd:
- Closer gear ratios for more gear choices during AutoX runs
- Taller top gear for better highway MPG (2,380rpm vs 5spd 2,740rpm @ 80mph)
- Stronger steel t-case
- T-case gears appear to be weaker but only seems to be an issue on high HP drag builds
- Transmission end-case can crack (Billet 6061 part available)
- Only built with 25-spline output shafts (300M upgrade available)
Both can suffer from bellhousing cracking between input and intermediate shaft (Weld in braces available)
- 6spds have a dogbox gear set available
- Straight-cut 1st and reduced helical 2nd gear
- Taller 1st and 2nd gear ratios
