All mufflers are street legal as long as they don't throw your exhaust noise paste X amount of decibels (at least in CA).

maybe different as to what is ENFORCED, but it is federal law. I think what should be reminded to everyone is that sometimes more flow isn't aways better... I mean, I lost noticeable torque with no intake and a custom exhaust. There is only so much that you can do to the intake side while keeping it NA, so, in this guy's opinion, that's something some of you could do well to remember. It's all gotta balance out, or your torque could go through the floor, and kinda like the hokey pokey, that's what it's all about.

The back pressure myth! No car needs back pressure! I will explain.

What you are looking for is MAXIMUM EXHAUST VOLUME:VELOCITY. This is especially true in N/A cars. There is a point where too big of piping will slow down the flow of the exhaust gasses. Basically what happenes is that the engine can only push the exhaust out so far until it "Hangs up" or "Drags" or however you want to look at it. Then it actually takes energy to "Push" the gas to the tailpipe outlet. There is a happy medium where the exhaust gas does not slow down until it exits into the atmosphere. It is very easy to unterstand the way that it works, but very difficult to explain. It is a ratio of Volume:Velocity. I hope that I am speaking on a level that it easily comprehendable, and I hope that I helped some of you. If you are at the perfect diameter of piping, the exhaust is actually being "sucked" out of the engine by way of the venturi affect. Too big of diameter and you lose the "Vaccuum", "Syphon", or "Venturi" affect and you engine will no longer run optimumly. Man, it is very hard to explain. Did you guys read the new SCC with the Z car that lost HP and TQ after that badass exhaust? They summed it up superbly. "Trial and Error" is how exhaust are designed. There is not formula to dictate the optimum diameter. It is purely trial and error.

Andy

I took my stock cat off about a year ago and put in a high flow cat.
Haven't been pulled over yet though i don't think german police really care. when i take it to inspection i'm just going to put the stock one back on again.

First of all lets get a few things straight. I dont know any cops that are gonna crawl under your car to see if it has a cat. Esp. if its raining or very hot out. second, as long as you can pass the visual and smog check for your area, your legal.I live in NJ and we have 2 year insepctions. The look under the car with a mirror to visually check, then they proceed to "dyno" the car at 20 MPH.

Second, to "break" a cat, you have to: 1) smash the **** outta it with a hammer and break the honeycomb filter inside, WHICH could break and get caught in the rest of your exhaust (not a good thing)
2) Run the car so lean or so rich that it melts the filter inside the cat, WHICH would mean the car is barley driveable.

My suggestion would be to go buy a high-flow cat, and bring it to a Meineke or Midas and ask them to change it out. Most of the people who work in those places are car guys and generally will help you out. Just check the parking lot and see what the emploees are drving-

RRM's HFC's are OBD-2 compliant. Basically they are a legal replacement. However you can't change the cat unless it's bad.

Cali cops will crawl under to check... happened many times to myself even though i was being respectful. Cops are cracking down harder and harder. If they look and say that it looks modified tell them you had to put a new one in... if they ask why tell them that you bottomed out on the road so it put a small dent/hole in it and broke the inside stuff. Use the word stuff so you seem like you don't know what your talking about. Tell him you got the cat from the same muffler shop that installed you muffler and found the problem. If they ask give them a name to a local muffler shop. At that point they'll stop or if they ask for more details start the I don't knows. Worse thing to happen you get a "report for testing ticket." The car will pass just fine.
