Break in mileage

I know the factory manual says 600 miles under 5000 rpm, but I have talked with other turbo owners who did 1000 miles. Does everyone think after 600 it is ok to boost to redline, or maybe only to 6000 rpm for 1000 miles, then after that to redline if necessary? Also, is having the dealer change my mobil one at 1000 miles acceptable or would anyone do it earlier or later? Lastly, the 600 mile break in says nothing about full boost, only 5000 rpms. I can safely say I have only 300 miles on the car and have fully boosted in second till about 4500 rpms before shifting and it feels great, but I only did this 4-5 times so far, this seems acceptable right?? I know these are only opinions, but they might help me as well as others later!!

Hi,

I followed the owners manual recommendation and my car has had zero problems with just under 10,000 miles. Boosting to 5,000 rpm is not a problem once and a while. Just drive the car like a stock Honda Civic DX for 600 miles then have a ball. Enjoy!

The oil change is fine at 1,000 miles or at 3,000 miles. You will get 10 different opinions from 10 different owners concerning oil change interval. I follow the owners guide for most stuff.

couldn't agree more. the break in process has been in debate for over 10 years now. i know many people who beat the crap out of their car they minute they leave the dealership and i know many people that do 1000 miles of easy driving. i personally have my own way of break in which is to shift at 3k rpm for the first 100 miles and than slowly increasing the rpm and speed every 50 miles or so. i have had 0 problems with my car so far.

good luck and enjoy your new toy,

Snir

yea the break in process is really shady. ive heard that the engines are actually broken in from the factory and the 600 or so miles is to break in the clutch and brakes. but others say the engines are not broken in from the factory and says it's nothing about the clutch or brakes..there's also different opinions about hard break ins and easy break ins.

Thanks guys,
I know it is "only" a 30,000 dollar toy, but I want the best damn toy I can get! I will continue to drive back roads and limit boosting until I get to 600, then let loose. I also constantly try to get to 5000 rpm in 2nd or 3rd and let the engine "downbrake" or decelerate the car in hopes of seating the rings better. I know the mobil 1 debate vs dino oil goes on forever, but I feel I don't want to void my warrenty and mitsu didn't give us synthetic oil to allow these engines to fail early ( that would be a huge financial loss on all the warrantied rebuilds) just my 2 cents.

I went the first 1000 miles under 4000RPM and didn't pass 5000 RPM until after 2000 miles. Maybe too conservative, but I sleep well at night.
