Not true. No need for key. A well trained car theif can steal your car if they want. I think all they have to do is pop the bonnet from the wire which they can get at with a screwdriver somewhere in the fender. That cut's off the alarm. Not sure what they do to start the car probably hotwire or something.
Evo's have a lot of parts that are in demand in the aftermarket, thus it's a prime target. I live in hong kong, and all evo owners here are semi-paranoid. The insurance agencies have black listed this car.
The states is generally safer. Just don't park your car anywhere sketchy ... but its more about luck, or bad luck in this case.

you can't hotwire an EVO because of the chip in the key it will not start or work trying to do it that way there is only 3 ways to steal an EVO that im aware of.
1) get the keys
2) load it on a flatbed
3) very technically involved and sides that I don't want to give would be thievs any ideas.
