Learning to drive

I was reading some stuff about crashes and everywhere people were saying that people shouldn't be given that kind of power (like an evo) if they dont know how to controll it. Here is my question though, how are we supposed to learn how to controll that power without actually using it. Shouldnt we just be really carefull at the begining untill we get used to it?

I wouldn't recomend an EVO for a first car for anyone they need to learn all the driving basics etc on a car that is really easy to drive. Your right you can't know how to handle power until you have it but you shouldn't be trying to get used to that amount of power while learning how to drive a manual etc. It doesn't take rocket science to drive an EVO but do be careful at first with any new car you get because every car is different and will drive slightly differently. If you have never driven a sports car or AWD car before be especially careful with the EVO. AWD handles very differently and lots of power when your used to a toyota or Geo can be a dangerous thing. But as long as your careful and safe about things its all good you will pick it up quick and if your like me you will never want to go back to anything but another real sports car.

ya for ur first car dont get an evo drive ur parents cars or something for like a year or two just to get the basics of driving down. Anyone here will admit that with an evo as their first car they ould be dead or have no license left due to tickets. I got mine after 8 months of driving a minivan and all i know is i still almost lost my license(damn police)

Yeah, but his question still stands even if it isn't his first car. Where can you go to learn how to drive fast? Anybody with any experience taking advanced driving classes?

There's nothing wrong with having an evo as your first manual car. You'll just have to replace things down the road quicker and have a worn clutch. Those crashing are probably due to not being ready to go on the road and gassing the car, letting the clutch out and taking off. If you are reasonable and anaylze slow and smooth, you'll be fine.

Drive fast? Thats not hard...to do it quickly try BMW, Porsche or Skip barber.

My first manual car. Second car overall. 36,000 miles, stock clutch. Daily driven. 1 year of ownership. You just have to be responsible and know your limits.

Here is my situation. I have been driving a little over 2 years. My family has a minivan and a BMW. My uncle is a very good driver (he lives in poland though - I'm in the US). He was always telling me about how much better manual was and I was always like 'yeah whatever' because I just thought it was cool. After I started driving I HATE automatic cars, acellerating onto the highways is a pain in the ***. The BMW seems to have no power and its so freakin heavy or just unresponsive. Yeah it can go fast but I just don't really like it.

I drove stick a little in poland and my uncle was teaching me and its pretty easy. The only thing that got me was hitting the clutch when you stop and then slowly releasing it when you want to accelerate. And I'm pretty good with phisics and pretty good at driving (but I bet everyone thinks they are good )

I was thinking mabey I should get an evo, I could get a cheaper manual car to learn but that just seems like a waste of money. Mabey I should get some used junk for $1000

[edit] I forgot to ask this so ... Just to make sure an Evo will be much better at acceleration, quick turns, breaking... pretty much everythin except comfort and top speed than a BMW.. right? (Im talking about a stock evo)

evo is my first car/manual. i practiced very little on an old toyota, but got the hang of it. i think people are wrong when they say that this thing is an "untameable beastt" and so on, the power is sufficient and the handling is great. its power and handling imo can help very much when getting out of sticky situations. anyways it's not like your going to be pushing the limits on the road, it's just not worth it. i've been taught just to use the 70% of the car's potential [ie, hard cornering, clovers, etc] because there is always a small percentage that the conditions aren't right [ie, oil or whatever]. anyways, keep the racing on the track.

I don't think I would ever give a 16 year old a car with more power than I think they are capable of handling as the first car they drive. TOO COCKY and IGNONRANT at that age IMHO!! I highly doubt that 99% of the current EVO VIII owners (myself included) are good enough drivers to actually "drive" the car. I know a few people who were blessed enough to get the change to learn to drive at the Bonderaunt School of Driving, and they have candidly admitted that they thought they knew how to drive before going to the class, but they were way wrong! I would love to see how not good of a driver I am by enrolling in that school!!

Haha yea thats funny when people say "oh you can't drive that turbo car its to much power" It just really depends on the person. If I don't trust a person I wouldn't let him/her drive my evo. Some people just abuse that and will take your car for a joyride because they just don't care, and are major idiots.

i wanted a 3000 gt vr4 or an eclipse GSX for my first car (ruled out the GSX cause i couldn't fit in it with the sunroof... too tall) but i couldn't get one because of insurance rates, parents, etc. it was probably a good choice, i've learned much of my car's limits, and hopefully that'll help me better in the future. plus, waiting for the evo will probably make it that much more fun when i finally do get it . when i drove the evo, it still did scare me a bit when the turbo suddenly spooled up, but it was an awesome feeling. maybe it's not the best car for a young driver, but as long as you don't total it, you'll be really lucky to have a great car like that.

So did I at your age. I am not much older or wiser than you, I just know at that age and when I got my driver's license, I thought I was EVIL FOCKING KENIVEL (spelling) and I was indestructible. Same situation now, but with an EVO VIII, I would have been dead within the first week! And I had a Camry!! I am sure many of the more mature members would agree with me. I am a humble person now...I will admist that I am not a good driver at all...I am getting better at it though!
