? For California/Oregon EVO Owners

Ok. So my mom lives in Portland, where there's no sales tax. I live in San Diego and go to college here. What is the tax/reg. fees and everything involved in buying a new car? Would it be wise for me to buy in OR and drive down to CA, or do I have to pay CA fees if I do that? (it'd break in the car since its like 1k miles)

Your input is very much appreciated. I thank you in advance.

registration is like 120 bucks or so that should be the only fee you have to pay to buy a car here however with a Cali drivers lisence you will probably get charged cali sales tax unless your mom buys the car then you buy it from her that would be the only way I know of to legally get around payin the tax

you don't have an OR drivers lisence do you? if so then its not a prob at all but if you come here with a CA lisence to buy a car the dealer will probably have to take sales tax to pay CA.

I don't believe there is any tax in OR for buying cars ( we get income taxed uber bad instead)
You don't need to keep it in your moms name just have her buy it then sell it to you because unlike dealers private sellers don't have to collect sales tax

you can request a one way permit to drive it to oregon and register it there. if you want to avoid CA sales tax, you can also get a one way permit to OR so you can pay taxes there. the only problem with the tax permit, is that you must have it trucked with a bill of laiden. if the EVO touches the streets of CA with you in the driver's seat, you must pay CA sales tax.

well i just thought since my mom lives in OR i mgith as weel take advantage of no sales tax and break in the Evo on the drive down to CA - killing 2 birds with 1 stone

so would the easiest way be, have my mom buy it, then switch the ownership to me?

They make sure that you cant do that... if it was possible everyone would go out of state to register their vehicles and not pay taxes and california would lose ALOT of money.

It can be done since his mom lives there if she were to buy the car then sell it to him the dealer would have no reason to charge sales tax to a long time oregon resident. And as long as Alen gets his own financing from the bank or if he is paying cash just pay the car off from his mom. Bank doesn't care where you buy the car or about taxes as long as they get their payments and interest and his mom certainly wouldn't charge him sales tax. Without his mom living here It would be almost imposible though

well he cant drive around california with oregon plates... (vehicle has to be registered in california if it's gonna stay down here past a certain amount of time). So you can't avoid california's vehicle registration fees.

this is true you will have to pay cali's registration fees but shouldn't have to pay sales tax anyway
