Things i've learned while owning an EVO

First time poster long time reader... Okay that's out of the way.

These are from my personal observations, your mileage will vary.

It's faster then you think
I know it may not be the fastest car in the world, but after hitting 90 on the side streets without batting an eye... it's damn fast. {noface}

This car is NOT good for learning to drive stick
This is my first manual car i have ever owned. I have driven a manual eclipse (FWD), 1980 (something) Ford 150, and a Hyndai excel. (mind you, seat time was minimal and i sucked tremendously). The evo was still the most unforgiving of the lot, you make a mistake, it turns around and sticks it's tongue out at you (driveline lashing extetreme!!! {OMG} ). Granted now I am much better, but the first week was extremely rough.

NEVER let your wife drive
you will never see your car ever again... especially if she can drive stick :( (my only saving grace was that she likes her truck better... whew!!!)

5th gear is great/ 5th gear sucks
It's nice to be able to accelerate in 5th on the freeway (no downshifting required). However, regarding mpg consumption at high speeds (above 75) on the freeway, can be a bit better (6 speed anyone???)

Good lord the brake dust!!!
I'm probably gonna get lung cancer from all that brake dust, my previous car it took a week or two to get what i get in ONE DAY on my evo. I can see the future.. and it says... CARBOTECH....

Light colors are much better then dark
After owning a midnight blue car (2000 Celica GTS), it's soo much trouble to keep clean and shiny. To those who have a black or dark colored car, props on keeping it clean, I know how much of a hassle it can be... :ang2hap: (but when a nice black car is waxed....ooooh how sweet it looks.. for 6 mins till the dust layer comes back on top)

Brakes? We don't need no stinkn' brakes
I really don't know what all of you are smoking, but come on, the stock Brakes are damn good. Worst case, just get yourself a decent set of pads and possibly a good set of slotted rotors. (notable exception to those who acutally autocross excessively with their evo's)

And now for your personal enjoyment:
"Things i've learned while reading these forums"

Check the octane Rating
Heeey that hp/tq is niiice that is what I am gonna.... waitamiute... your running 100+ octane.. ARRRGGH!!!!...

Where is the bloody boost gauge!!
SAAB's got it. High end turbo cars do. Heck even the Pontiac Grand Prix GTP (supercharged v6) has it.. MITSUBISHI... (all repeat after me) "WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING!!!!"

Could you all proofread your posts?
Granted i'm as guilty as the next guy on this one, but geesh people, at least read over it ONCE!!! You will probably catch some glaring grammer issues as well as some of the more simple spelling mistakes, and it only takes a few minutes.... (and makes it eaiser for us to understand what the heck you are saying)

Can't we all just get along?
I understand some of you have differnces in tuning, but please, stop bashing shiv or al.. it's getting annoying and we have to keep reading through mindless crap to get to the topic on hand..
READ the posts thouroghly before posting, so you dont REPEAT your contrary opinion multiple times (or at least read some of the other posts, since most of the time they answer your complain/question you asked.. granted it's 3 pages earlier).
To quote last nights that 70's show: "how many times have I told you, don't tease the BEAR, DON'T TEASE THE BEAR!"

A picture is worth a thousand words, just like the interpertation of a dynograph
I find it just hilairous that every dyno that is posted is subject to ridicule, scruitiny, and degredation by others..
WHO CARES if <insert tuner/car here> is better then yours
WHO CARES if <insert tuner/car here> has more hp up top or more tq down below
WHO CARES if <insert tuner/car here> is faster then yours.
WHO CARES how <insert tuner/car here> tunes/dyno's cars.

What you should be caring about is, is it faster/better then it was, and how reliable is it?

Every tuner/person has a differnt way of enjoying their evo. Some like it with more power up top, some prefer more low end torque. Just because you don't like the power delivery, doesn't mean it's wrong or incorrect. It's just different.. different strokes for differnet folks. If its not for you, no prob, but we dont' care to hear you rant/rave/whine about how that is "totally wrong/incorrect dyno readings" and "mine is sooo much better then yours" .. or the infamous "you don't know what your doing, it should be like this... ".

Enjoy your car the way it is, and don't bring down the rest of us.

Now if there is something GLARINGLY wrong.. like the a/f running lean, or excessivly high boost, etc.. information would be helpful, but not in a condencending way.

okay sorry, rant over... again take as you see fit. Usually with a large dose of aspirin, , yoga, or other legal ways to chill.
(the not so legal ways.. well your on your own about those ones.. )

LHB

I have autocrossed "excessively" with the Evo, and the stock brakes are fine. At one event, I had a co-driver who trophied at the autoX Nationals in Topeka, who has autoXed all kinds of cars, and he was amazed at how good the brakes are.

But, otherwise, good post and welcome. {thumbup}
