Evolutionary Monster

Lue's 9 second monster recently broke the record for the fastest four cylinder car in Jamaica, not to mention the fastest Mitsubishi around.

Craig Lue is no stranger to success. From setting trends to breaking records in the Drag Racing community he’s done it all and continues to push the boundaries, when most would think he has nothing else left to prove. The last time he graced these pages he’d managed to create a monster Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII. Daily driven it ran ten second quarter-mile times, however as all drag racers know the speed grows exponentially with cost. That’s why at our previous meeting there was a second Evolution VII sitting in the back of his shop being prepped with the sole purpose of destroying that elusive ten second barrier. Lue knew that a nine second run would require a greater effort than was his daily driver would be able to deliver. There was no question about it; nine seconds or lower would require a serious effort.

The plan was simple, more power, less weight, higher traction. The rolling Evolution VII chassis was first stripped to get it ready to receive the goodies needed for the fight with the nine-second barrier. Lue with chief mechanic Derrick pulled all the parts out of the street car and started moving them over to the new machine, but even that wasn’t enough as some extra massaging would take place in the engine bay. Unlike my previous discussion with Lue, he was a bit tentative to divulge key components, but made no bones about the good old 4G63 motor being filled with custom components to make its 2-litres of displacement generate 790whp at 35psi. What’s clearly visible is the turbocharger being use. It’s new, and smaller than the old one. Based on the favoured GT35R series it’s a custom specification unit from Precision. The turbo is part of an ETS turbo kit that mounts it face forward. The visceral orientation of the turbo is only matched by the massive runners of the Stainless Steel manifold it hangs proudly off. A 38mm Tail external wastegate vents to atmosphere, its scream matched perfectly with the small length of pipe that passes for an exhaust system nearby. Yes, there is no gutter sized piping running to the back of the car, just a cut out in the right side of the front bumper. Stand too close and prepare to get flamed. Lue would admit to a full Kelford cylinder head, which combines custom grind camshafts and a port and polish job to increase flow. An ETS intercooler as thick as a loaf of harddough bread cools things down before entering the engine via a Magnus intake manifold.

An ETS turbo kit gives the Evo its meanness with a face forward Garrett based on the popular GT35R trim.

However, that’s apparently not enough as he enlists a CO2 system to help stabilize temperatures and boost. The monster motor is fed by four 1600cc injectors via a massive Aeromotive fuel pump sitting in the trunk. That pump pulls C16 race gas from custom fuel cell now fixed to the spare tyre well and when it does make it into the engine a Spark Tech CDI system ensures complete combustion. Orchestrating the whole process is an AEM ECU tuned by Machines Gone Wild in Florida.

All that power isn’t any good if it can’t get to the wheels. Making sure the engine and the gearbox remain friends is a Tilton twin disc clutch and pressure plate. Next in line is the gearbox built up with the finest parts from the Evolution VIII and IX. The modifications not only toughen it up but also have the proper ratios for drag racing.

Tein coil-overs keep the 16-inch Hoosier drag planted to rocket the car down the strip. Inside Craig is happy to have his helmet on as the interior has been stripped of all no essential items. Only the dashboard, and factory Recaro seat remain intact. The weight loss is extended outside and paired with aerodynamic function as the rear bumper has been seriously slotted. On the trunk the spoiler is MIA as well.

In the driver’s seat
With the completion of the project there was actually very little doubt that the car would meet its target.

“That’s why we built it,” said brother Dwight Lue. “We ran 10.1 during the shakedown the day before.”

The interior has been reduced to basic needs.

Older brother Craig is no newbie to the horizontal acceleration game and qualified with a 9.8 run dialing in his run group. Subsequent runs solidified his record, and even losing to the faster Camaro of Dean Shaw with a 9.5 second pass rolling through the speed traps at 149mph. The Evolution may have come second but it garnered the attention of all, including some worldwide publicity.

Nine second Evolutions aren’t a dime a dozen and after rewriting the record books LueBoyz Racing found themselves invited to the biggest Mitsubishi showdown on the planet, the Buschur DSM/EVO Shoot Out. Slated for Ohio in August the event has become ground zero for the fastest Mitsubishis in the United States.

“We were happy to get that Monkey off our back,” commented Dwight on the record breaking run. The car broke several local records including the fastest Lancer Evolution, the fastest four-wheel drive, and the fastest four-cylinder vehicle with its final run. Considering the raft of accolades Lue is looking ahead to running in the United States and is currently attempting to get ready to ship the car overseas for the event. He’s bullish on his chances there.

“I mean we have the fastest man in the world,” joked Craig, “why can’t we have the same with this car.” The better facilities should make the quarter-mile times even faster. “Right now the real issue is safety equipment. I need to get a ten second license, upgrade the roll cage, get a parachute, and a fixed race seat. That’s about it for the car.” The bigger issue for LueBoyz Racing is funding this expedition.

“I think this is a perfect opportunity for Jamaica,” explains Dwight.

Craig concurs. “The Buschur meet isn’t just some drag race it’s a huge opportunity to network both professionally and socially. I mean I can’t imagine what kind of exposure this would give to Jamaica or any sponsor that would be apart of this.”

Not deterred by the lack of fiscal support the team will do its best to get the car to Miami by Mid-July. Once there they’ll partner with Machines Gone Wild in Miami to further test and refine the car for the August showdown. They’ve already registered with American parts supplier Spark Tech after their nine second run making them eligible for a host of prizes should they manage to break into the eights.

“LueBoyz Racing is just really hoping right now that someone steps up and takes hold of this opportunity. It would help both parties. Until then we’ll be trying our best to get there ourselves.”

In order to save weight and remain aerodynamic the Lancer gets stripped to a bare minimum. Gone from the outside is the rear wing and slots cut into back bumper.

We are proud to see how much Craig has accomplished in such a short period of time with this car... 9.5 is most definitely and achievement.

We are proud to be the Ignition of choice on this car. I recently saw Craig at pbir and he confirmed the system was doing it's job like the first day he purchased it over a year ago.

We welcome LueBoyz Racing to our Bounty on the 8's

Good luck in the future.

+1!

Craig has been a long time customer and it's about time that his achievement has received the recognition he deserves! I know 8's are around the corner for this guy! Again, Craig.. you are doing a stand up job!

Thanks,

Michael
