JDM Evo IX specs

i listed this in the "interior photos" post but figured it could use one of its own. this info is from the Japanese magazine "Best Car" which i picked up in Japan a week ago. there is an article on the Evo IX as well as a comparison report of the Evo IX, the Subaru S203 (special WRX STI with 320ps. only 555 made and costs ~$50K), and the Mazda Atenza (Mazda 6 AWD Turbo car with 272ps).

anyway here's the info on the motor. the MIVEC looks like it does a nice job of fattening up the torque curve!

2005 Mitsubishi Evo IX (Evo VIII MR numbers listed for comparison)

Engine
4G63 MIVEC Turbo (4G63 Turbo)
4 cylinder DOHC (4 cylinder DOHC)
1997cc (1997cc)
280ps at 6500rpm (280ps at 6500rpm)
40.8 kgm at 3000-4500rpm (40.8 kgm at 3500rpm)

Actually the JDM specs indicates a higher torque figure (41.5kg-m) if you get the GT/RS editions since these have the new magnesium turbine titanium turbo (i just got the translation... not exactly sure what it really means) as standard. GSR owners have option of specifying the same turbo (in which case, the torque will also be the same).

Otherwise GSR spec is only 40.8 (same as JDM MR)

honestly, we all know that for JDM specs, they'll have 280ps due to the gentlemen's agreement...

but anyway, the mivec should help out in the torque department..cant wait to see what it'll be like once it's out

I read in a british car mag (EVO) that the agreement is off due to one of the car companies breaking the agreement. I think it was Acura that broke it but I'm not 100% on it.

It is official. Acura has broken the agreement with their new RL

Now Mazda is making a 4th Generation of the RX-7 with about 300hp

Japanese car makers agreed several years ago on the 276 hp max limit on production cars, i think to avoid too much hi-powered cars getting in the hands of young and inexperienced drivers.

As far as I know, the "Gentleman's Agreement" no longer exists. The JDM car makers have recently agreed to lift their unspoken agreement in order to compete with the US and Germans in the production of higher HP cars.

6/10 Japan,
Japan Automobile Manufactures Association (JAIA) concluded that the industry's voluntary regulation of horsepower to 280hp applied to Japanese vehicles will be terminated.

- Sankei News

However, I wouldn't expect them to miraculously start outputting cars with 350+ hp with any regularity anytime soon. I'm sure they'll want to perfect their manufacturing processes in order to live up to their quality/reliability standards they're known for.

Just because the "Acura RL" doesn't exist in Japan doesn't mean that the car doesn't exist. It's called the Honda Legend over there.

That goes for all 3 big JDM companies with luxury nameplates. It was the US's need to have "luxury" that had them create their luxury brands. This status need isn't as prevalent in Japan and so they don't separate out their "Lexus, Acura, Infiniti" models from their parents nameplate. However, Toyota has started to sell their Lexus line in Japan, so look to see this to change things. I'm not sure what Nissan plans to do over there but as for Honda, they're not planning on separating out their Acura models from their lineup over there...correct me if I'm wrong and sorry for jacking the thread
