Evo IX vs X - Dealer made the decision for me!
Hi Folks,
First post! Thought I'd share a recent experience with the Evo community...
Like many, I've been back and forth between going for a IX SE at or holding out for a X. Been looking forward to experiencing Evo ownership for a long time!
As I don't currently have a car (live downtown), I did some research and found a IX SE, thought I'd go for it and did some negotiating with the dealer over the phone. He gave me his 'lowest price', so with that in mind I drove 2.5 hours with a friend to take the IX for a drive.
Despite some minor paintwork scratches and swirls (it had clearly been on the lot for a very long time) I liked the ride so tried to haggle a little more but the dealer was having none of it, so I agreed to pay the previously quoted price. The dealer then says that he'd made a mistake and the 'new' lowest price was almost $1k more than the previous quote. To go down to the previous best price he'd need the dealer owner's approval, which couldn't come until the following week as the owner was out of town and unreachable.
So a complete day wasted. Needless to say I'm feeling like the dealer tried to take me for a ride but quoting one price and not sticking to it. I'm sure it's the oldest trick in the book - give a quote, get the buyer to really want the car, then jack up the quote. Needless to say on principle I'm going to tell them to stick it, as I'm expecting them to come back with 'sorry, can't do it for the original quote' and expect me to pay the higher price.
Could be a blessing in disguise because in the back of my mind I've been thinking the Evo X is going to be amazing. Think I'll get a beater to hold me out until the X comes out.... I think the wait and the extra few grand is going to be worth it.

I know the General Sales Mngr. in Durham, NC. I can get you a good deal...
At this point, I would wait for an X. They are less than a year away, and more and more info will start to appear about the car.
Then, if you really didn't like the X, you can always go back and get a IX. And probably for less than what you can now.

one of the local dealers near me is still asking 10k over msrp on IXs. I told them where to stick it and bought mine closer to home ( then Mistu pulled the deallership from the guys I bought i from) I thought they were shady but I didn't realize they were that shady. Oh well I bought my IX for 1000 below MSRP, and I would have left paying MSRP if they had the color that I wanted.
Plus I want a 5 or 6 speed so waiting is easy.
When I bought my Evo VIII, they tried going over MSRP by $3000 (market adjustment!?). With some negotiating, I bought my Evo in March 03 and got for $183 over invoice. They almost kicked me out for telling them how I felt about some of their dirty tricks.
If you are willing to fly out to Dallas, Don Herring with make you a sick deal on an Evo IX.
Anyway, last comment, I would wait 1 year on the Evo X. There is going to be some bugs to work out just like their was with the Evo VIII (P0300 anyone?).

Good points. I'd also include how the DSG holds up, aftermarket parts, tunability, and even if they're going to release a couple models (RS or MR). I'd wait at least a year before purchasing one.
btw, I'm still betting there will be a manual tranny in the first year.
Let's hope that Mitsubishi has learned from some of the issues in the past. It seems like they did, considering the 9 is better than the 8 in a straight up comparo. I'm hoping they release a manual when it first comes out as well.
I remember when they first released the evo in the us the dealership in my city wanted 10K over MSRP and alot of other dealerships did the same thing. As the hype went down so did the price. So I would imagine that when the X is released then they will do the same thing.
Yup I head down here in Miami there were idiots paying up to $40,000 for 2003 Evo's.
This is why dealerships can get away with it.
PEOPLE PLEASE...DONT PAY anything more than $3000 over MSRP. SHeeesh
