I believe those batteries are specially formulated NOT to release Hydrogen gas (H2) while charging. The hybrid PRIUS uses the same design, and cannot be recharged at more than 5amps! But they last a lot longer this way since it's not exposed to extremly cold/hot temperatures found under the hood

 

so that's another reason they didn't have fold down rear seats. the 1st reason was the extra bracing. the boot looks kinda small though.

Don't need to run a power wire all the way from under the hood, through the firewall, through the interior and behind the seats...
