The Up side of a 300+lbs Evo X...
The Up side of 300+lbs on the new
Evo X is Safety !!! I would bet that the New Evo X will get a 4 or 5 Star head-on rating, This new car is far safer then the older Evo's. Safety is a good thing when you need it & worth the the 300lbs.
Take a look at this Crash video from 5-Gear, New Vs Old.

Honestly people weight gains on new cars is just a fact of life we are going to have to get use to-
The new 135i looks like it is gonna weigh about 3400 to 3500Lbs, factoring in that the 335i weighs around 3500 to 3600Lbs, that is about 100Lbs less than the 335i, not the 200 to 300Lbs everybody was expecting.
The new STI looks like it will be slightly heavier than the outgoing model, rumors were putting it at about 3200-3250Lbs, but it turns out will probably be like 3350-3400Lbs.
The G37 weighs in at a 3700Lbs+
The Nissan GT-R looks like it is gonna weigh in at around 3750Lbs or more, honestly I was expecting 3500Lbs or even less (my bad).
The Shelby Cobra weighs 4000Lbs, you think us EVO owners are having a heart attack about weight gains, you should have seen the Cobra boards when the Shelby Cobra weight was reported, LOL.
Even little hatchbacks like the GTI and Mazdaspeed 3 don't weigh 3000Lbs or less any more. I think both those cars weigh over 3100Lbs.
The new 2008 Accord Sedan/Coupe weigh in at 3650Lbs+
The new E92 M3 weighs in at 3700Lbs+, the E46 M3 weighed in at 3450 to 3550Lbs (depending on model and options).
It seems like the weight gain comes when there is a new body or chassis used or even just strengthed, the new or strengthed body is stronger and superior than the one it replaces but it usually involves a weight gain. This is something that happends to all cars, and eventually to keep pace with the competition and new standards all cars must do this, it was the EVO's turn again.

^^^For the JDM model as it does not come equipped with side/head/knee airbags or door beams as standard(different safety regs. in Japan). The US model does (as standard), along with the all the misc. parts to make this safety equip. work effectively (added structural enhancements, pyrotechnic equipment, etc.).
Hey, the weight has to go somewhere.
BTW, you ever see an Evo VII-IX crash? They fold like tin cans.

Yes, the RS even has the drives side airbad and drivers knee airbag. It does not have the passenger side airbag like the GSR versions though. So it looks like it may truely be a world car now, or close to it. Side and curtain airbags are optional to the GSR versions.
