newb from OHIO
Hello all. Located in Dayton. Current cars are an 03 Cobra
, 04 wrx wagon, and an 08 busa that is undergoing a turbo build.
I'm here because I'm considering swapping my cobra for an evo. So, I'll likely be asking a lot of newb type questions and perusing the classifieds. Thanks in advance for the help.

The tentative plan is to sell the cobra and wrx, buy a decent dd (Evo or 08 STi wagon) and then buy a c6z06 in 2 years. I honestly wont have a lot of time to play with the cobra anymore. It's a fair weather car, and when the weather is fair, I'll be playing on the e85 turbo busa.

yea, i wish but it's pretty much a track car. no a/c, power steering, powerglide, and worst of all drag brakes.
i will say it's not all my doing. i bought it pretty much stripped down like that and i just installed the powerplant. i'm going to finish it up and sell it as a turn key race car. that phase of my life ended a while ago, its just too bad it took a few extra years to get the car done.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised by how well the Evo handles. I came from a 97 DOHC Cobra with severe weight reduction. One test drive in the Evo 9 and I traded it right there on the spot and never looked back or even remotely thought about ever owning another Mustang.
It was that much better! The traction from AWD is above having a V8 in my book. The handling makes the car extremely fun to toss around in all weather conditions. The low end torque compared to my Cobra was much better except for the first 1500rpm or so. The Evo had way more torque from 2500rpm to 4000rpm which is *exactly* where I spend most of my time DDing.
Just remember that *one* magical time when the road was dry, hot, and sticky. Your Cobra dumped all it's power to the ground without a hint of wheel spin in what was a perfect launch. You probably had a huge smile on your face and wished you could always do that instead of only during dry hot sticky days. The Evo can do that on street every day, rain or shine without running a drag tire.
The Z06 is nice and all, but personally the practicality of an Evo cannot be beat. You might be happier with a 2.3 and a black pushing 500-650 at the wheels. Unless you really modify the Evo, the Z06 will be a better fair conditions car. But we all knew that.

You mentioned a 2.3 and a black pushing 500-650.....I ran a fully built e-85 Evo X with a black back in November, didn't end well for him.

Evo in far lane.

If you raced him on a road course he would be so far ahead you wouldn't be able to read his license plate. You'd gain ground on the straights and he would walk away from you in the twisties.
I literally had to actually ride in an Evo to understand what all this "handling" talk was about. I kept thinking in my head "well I've taken some serious turns in the Cobra without issue, it's not that bad of a handling car". Then I drove the Evo and realized I was much farther off in my understanding of "handling".
Now I'd rather start with a handling car and make it fast. Much easier than trying to make a fast car handle well in my opinion. I just like the feedback and the feel of the Evo. To me that's more of a race car than my Cobra was despite their similar straight line speeds.
In the end both cars can basically do what you want. I've owned both too and each has their pros and cons. People think you're broke in the Evo, people think you're rich in the Cobra. Evo has year-round DD fun, Cobra is more of a weekend show-car kind of fun. Where I live we have lots of rain and snow, so the decision was quite easy. Plus I kind of like people's reaction to a small 4 door that just rips.... it's very much a sleeper to those who don't know what an Evo is.
Good luck with your decision. Seriously drive one before making your mind up.
FWIW my old 04 cobra with some h&r race springs on the stock bilstein shocks and struts was quite fun and handled corners pretty well. it was a bit fish-tail happy at lower speeds as the torque liked to blow the rear tires off but that was part of the joy.
a lot of people in the mustang world bagged on the IRS but i loved it. i even put a full IRS setup on an 2002 saleen clone.
now that being said, the evo is stupidly quick around corners and the steering is a joy. on a road track the evo all the way.

Love the Cobra! One of my all time favorite cars. Ive wanted a silver or burgundy convertible Terminator for quite awhile. There is a VERY nice one here for sale on the forums from NC that Ive contemplated getting but just havent.
