Interesting Quirk

I came across an interesting quirk.. Keep in mind that its due to a function "As designed" but I was attempting a workaround..

We have always had trouble with the Launch control feature in the UTEC being linked to the flat shift RPM..

I was attempting to work around it by setting the ECU to launch at 5000 rpm, and flat shift at 6300 rpm (these are arbitrary values and just for testing.. I actually haven't determined the best launch RPM yet for my driving)

Anyway.. In passthrough mode, the stationary rev limiter works fine, because the UTEC doesn't intercept the crossover point for the ECU..

Next, My map 3, with OLF enabled, you go part throttle and the ECU launch control works, you go WOT and it just revs past it.. This is Open loop fueling doing its job, and taking over for the ECU.. An unexpected quirk..

HOWEVER, if you disable OLF, and use maf intercept for tuning (definitely an option for me now that I can base tune my ECU) and everything works fine..

Just a quick FYI for you all..

Hmm, might have to give that a try.

But I have my launch at 6000 and I do lift to shift and as long as you don't touch the clutch pedal its fine and will go up to the 7800 redline with no problem.

Yep.. but that isn't exactly what I was describing.. Just that since the OLF takes over from the ECU after 30% throttle, it happens even when your standing still so it defeats the standing rev limiter.. It took me a second to figure out why my new flashed ECU didn't work..

Ahhhh. I forgot you are using the openecu program. Im sure what you did is create an 05 type lauch control and implement it into the 03 ecu, correct? I like the openecu as of right now, but we can talk about that in another thread.

But yes the UTEC will get rid of the ECU laucnh control if you go over your "open loop TPS threshold" beacuse thats when the UTEC takes over OLF and will go off of the parameters and constants that you have set.

Yep, Obviously I knew that already, but it was an interesting quirk that never occurred to me until I tried it.

Its a new product out that lets you download your ECU's data, modify it, and reflash it.. Not really a good tool for the beginner, but an amazing bit of technology.

This leads me up to my next comment, after working with the UTEC for the Evo since its release, I decided to remove it from my car...

I feel like I'm ending a great relationship with someone that you really don't want to end, but with the ability for me to tune my car with a reflash, I now have access to all the features I needed I no longer need to run the UTEC and not use all of its great features..

The ECUFlash lets me eliminate boost cut, eliminate fuel cut, have launch control, fine control over idle and injector scaling, among other things I would have needed to alter.

This doesn't change how I feel about the UTEC and its features, only that the features it offers (with the exception of the map switching and a few other things) Redundant.

This may sound funny, but I'm switching back to my old combination which is an S-AFC and an S-AVCR Boost controller, the S-AFC is only for fine tuning of my flashed maps..

I reflashed my car over the weekend, and it idles even better than it did before, I'd be hard pressed to tell there's even cams in the car now.

Don't fret though, I still will participate in UTEC discussions because I'm still a huge fan of it, and still will have the equipment around to bench test software and hardware changes..

Good to hear Jack. Im still dabbling with the OpenEcu right now but haven't had time lately to play around with it. It is an awsome tool and quite easy to understand and use. So I might not be too far behind you. I hope the logging feature is as good as the Subaru's, only time will tell.
