Access port release?? anyone know?
I just got off the phone with cobb today, and they said hopfully they will have it out in another month or two. they still dont know yet, because they are doing more testings on it to make sure its working right, so i guess we have to wait more.
How much testing is there to do!?
I'm all for them wanting to put out a quality product free of bugs, but I was expecting it to have been out before last year's end. I'm assuming it'll have several sets of maps for all the different Evo models ('03-'04s, '05s and '06s).

Coming from the Subaru crowd, I can say that Cobb always takes a very long time to come out with a new product. But when they do release the product, it is top quality and highly dependable. The ability to freely tune the AP became available relatively recently. But even before that, the AP was VERY popular with just Cobb's maps.
If their Evo AP is anything like the Subaru AP, it'll most likely become the #1 preferred ECU tuner for Evos.

^ That's what I figured. I was originally in the market for a WRX and intended to purchase the AccessPort if I got a Subaru, so I always read good stuff about them on nasioc, i-club and clubwrx.
Right, but what I want to know is if each AP will have the different maps for the different Evo model years. It's fairly clear that any of the maps for the '06 Evo IX won't be identical to that of the '03 Evo VIII.
One thing that I think is great about the AP is that it can hold multiple maps. So you can have an Agressive tune for fun, and Economy tune for driving to work and back, a Valet tune that keeps the engine out of boost and lowers the redline, and an Anti-Theft tune that will kill the engine if it goes above idle. You just select which map you want and it uploads it to the ECU. The V2 of the AP will also display data from the ECU in realtime, so many poeple have a mount to hold the AP on their dashboard.
Now, granted, I know very little about how the Evo's ECU is designed. SO i'm not sure if all of this is going to be possible with the Evo AP. For Subarus, their ECUs have two areas for maps. A Base Map and a Realtime Map. The Base Map can only be flashed ~100 times, and is really only used in case the ECU loses power. The Realtime Map is what the car runs off of and can be flashed an unlimited number of times. If the Evo ECU works like this, then I'm sure all the above will hold true.
Again, Cobb's first AP was very popular before the release of their ProTuner and StreetTuner software. Now, with the ability for shops and owners to make their own maps, and the improved AP V2, some of the older ECU/piggyback devices that were popular aren't even mentioned anymore on the STI forums.
If Cobb comes out with an AP that works with the X, it'll be #1 on my list.
ill tell you this, i just traded in my wrx for an evo and i had the accessport and loved it, im actually refusing to mod the ix until the accessport is release cuz i know its just that good. don't get me wrong ecuflash is probably better cuz you can tune yourself and its a lot cheaper, but if you want a quality product it will be the accessport. It might be taking a long time because they might be releasing street tuner software with it at the same time which would be good because a lot of you guys are tuning yourself.
The AccessPort is probably one of, if not the best mod for the Subaru. I have full confidence that Cobb won't let Evo owners down and once their product is released... it's definitely going to start a commotion
Cobb scares me for their complete lack of ability. If they had any clue they would have completed this project and released the damn thing last year when they still had a chance at selling more than 3 of them. The Evo is obviously VERY VERY low on their list which is why I have no desire to really buy from, since we'll probably get very little in the way of support.
Their inability to meet any sort of deadline or TUNE A FREAKING CAR in under a year that tuners have been doing for years now in an hour or two is beyond belief.
Frankly, I could have bought a tactrix cable and learned how to tune and started my own business in less time than its taken them.
Cobb is retarded.
