Boost leak test

Ok so my buddy wants to do one. Has stock piping etc. Only a MBC that would affect boost. Anything needs to be plugged etc? WHats the turbos inlet size? Im not new to testing since I tested all the time on my srt-4 just never on a evo. Can someone steer me in the right direction.

I didn't plug anything but didn't run it up to crazy boost either, just 10psi to find the obvious leaks.

do not plug anything and do not go over 22 psi no matter how much boost you running if you add more it will come out the oil valve cover cap.
as far as the size it's 2in for stock turbo. !sy time I did one I found 3 leaks no I do it with every oil change.

If your like me you run up to 40psi boost. You must test to 45 preferably 50psi. If you want to live in denial and not know if your leaking at your set boost (stock evo is roughly 20psi) then fine by me. However hardly any cars leak at only 10psi. However almost all cars leak at 20 psi.

Also air out the valve cover isn't a problem. What do you think happens when the car is in boost?

Until I get another tester, I'm using a kit that was designed for my stealth and it slips out when I go above 10 psi.

I found this thread to be very useful....

The links I have below are from the above thread link.....i hope this helps you out.

These two sites are useful...when doing your boost leak test don't rule out the TB area....

Can you just remove the air filter and attach it there or do you have to actually remove the intake pipe and attach is right at the turbo?

Dan628, There's no boost leak to test at the filter....just beyond the turbo as it creates the boost from then on.......hence its recommended on the Turbo to test the whole system.......if you do a boost leak test at the TB by removing the IC pipe....you then need to retest it (at the turbo) after putting it back together to verify you tightened everything back up correctly and didn't create a boost leak...loose connector .. or whatever.

I had the same problem my boost leak was at the throttle body, boost leak test should be done every couple thousand miles

I have an aftermarket intake if that matters with a cone style filter. Whats the difference? If I take off the filter and push air through the intake pipe, the air would go through the turbo right? I mean where would it lose pressure because everywthing is either capped of or has a hose attached to it.

^ I can't really answer that....aside from the inlet size of the intake being larger than the turbo.....I have read and followed everyone else's suggestions to just do it at the turbo and TB if needed. NOT the intake....like I said...there is no boost in the intake....just beyond the turbo......

there is no way in hell you can do a boost leak test at 45psi, 1st you will push everything open and you will not be able to tell if there is a leak or what. 2nd the diff is that when you drive the car you are using the air but when it of it's just lot of hot air like you.
