First Steps...

Assume, for a moment, that you are hoping to tune your car for more power BUT you cannot touch anything between the MAF and the Turbo Outlet. Exhaust is open, piggy back engine management is open.

HOW would you go about making more power in an EVO VIII?

Tough challenge, I know... but one I am faced with do to rule restrictions.

Your expert thoughts and analysis?

So you are saying you have to leave it on a maf system and stock turbo?

Well an intake, exhaust manifold (if i'm understanding this correctly), DP, midpipe, exhaust, boost controller, bigger injectors, fuel pump, cams, meth injection, and a tune. That should free up alot of power there.

Thanks Dry, but I cannot touch anything BETWEEN the MAF and the exhaust out on the Turbo.

So DP and exhaust is good, but I can't touch the injectors, cams, manifolds, etc.

Tuning is fine... ECU mods are fine... just no engine internals.

Well then, intake, intercooler, hard pipes, tune, bov, meth injection, boost controller, TBE, nitrous, etc.

Exhaust, tune, weight reduction, lighter wheels, smaller brakes (if this is for drag). Is a lighter flywheel allowed?

Tough challenge? Not hardly, I gained 70 whp with a TBE and a tune... And there's plenty PLENTY more you can do outside of the maf/turbo outlet.

Does installing meth/alky involve touching something between the MAF and the turbo outlet? I never had it on my car so I don't know, but TBE, tune, blah blah, basically everything DryBlaze said and you'll have a fairly decent amount of power I'm sure. Race gas, TBE, tune, MBC I had a gain of 85-100 whp (depending on how much boost I cranked it up to).

It'd be a challenge on most other cars... On an Evo, its cake to gain a ton of power from that. Especially if you have a lot of money to spend on everything outside of "between the maf and the turbo outlet"

Out of curiousity (and because it will probably help a little) what are these rules for? If you're turning it into a race car gutting every non-critical part outside of the "between" area will make the car mean even without adding any power. 11 lb/hp is a lot more than 9.3 lb/hp. That's 300 hp, 3300 and 2800 lbs.

mods

Mr evo9, that is a good one. A dude racing in NASA Time Trials here in Fla has an 05' evo 8 in the TTA class and says that he is running no engine mods other than a TBE. When his hood is open I look in and notice that the engine is kind of dirty; the sort of "patena" that a 3 year old car would have and low and behold notice that his turbo looks brand spaning new! Gee whiz, I must have falling off the beet wagon yesterday! Probably has a flash or a piggy somewhere too.

Cannot do any kind of extra injection... no meth, no NOS, nothing like that.

Exhaust is open, so that's fine... go big. Rules state I have to have a CAT, but what kind and where is totally open. No muffler is fine. My thought is to put the CAT right at the very end of the exhaust pipe.

Brakes are NOT open... so I cannot go for smaller brakes. Rotors and pad material is open, so lighter is fine but I have to have the same dimensions.

So I guess it's down to tuning, exhaust and weight reduction.

hmmm...

After a great talk with English Racing... I have a pretty good idea of what I need to do to be legal and still garner a whole lot of hidden horse power.

You guys should REALLY talk to them... Top Notch EVO Tuner. You've probably heard it before but... WOW... are these guys on the ball!

Thanks again for your help.
