I asked a company the same thing it has to do with the software. When they write the software it is easier to write for serial.

its much easier to code for a com port, they have been around since day dot on PC's and have great support in all languages for communication

if this actually works i know a website that can get 02 sensors pretty cheap.. just give them the bosch part number...
