Differences between stock airbox and open filter

I ran my car with an open element filter last week, and 3 weeks prior to that I ran the car with the stock airbox and K&N filter. This is what I have noticed.

The track temps were within 5 degrees of both visits..With my open element filter the car leaned out by about +.2 on the WBAF, this could have been due to slightly lower load readings as well since I have my fuel maps set up that way. The AIT before my passes were around 135 degrees dropping to around 110-115 during the run.
With the stock airbox I was only seeing a maximum of 117 dropping to around 90-95 during the runs. Ambient track temps were 84-86 degrees both times.

I did not see any differences in airflow from changing the filters.

So far I have not been able to gain ANY power from running an open element filter in the typical location.

I am going back thursday to test the open filter again and I have very consistant passes every time, IMHO better testing then a dyno..MY car's datalogs are fairly consistant from pass to pass as well..19 degrees of timing at 7000 and 22 at 8000 every pass less then 2 counts occasional knock.

If I cannot gain power using a typical intake I am going to fabricate my OWN cold air intake for ACD equipped evos..Honestly I will will be doing this regardless

Figured mabye some of you guys could benifit from this info.

Well so far hot air kills any difference I would see with a less restrictive filter and I break even for power..So far I have made no gain in power with an open filter..

FYI I am running the Dejon 3.5" inlet pipe to bother the open blitz (stainless mesh) filter AND stock airbox..

I had similar results when I tried a open element filter, in real life(no open hood and fan blowing).

The increased temp, minimal power gains and messed up reading pushed me to run the stock box again. I did however see a slight loss of airflow and modified the stock system to compensate, now I don't loose any airflow and run much cooler AITs.

Scoop to ram more cold air in stock snorkel

Cut up box with custom extra snorkel for increased volume.

Log your boost. You will notice that it will taper more with the stock airbox. I noticed exactly 1.5psi less @ 7500rpm.

As long as you keep IAT's under control and use a proper filter then; open>box.

The blitz type mesh filter with the open hole on top will disrupt the flow and won't work the properly with the stock maf. Also, the 3.5" intake pipe is only going to hurt you and disrupt the maf readings further....

If you are using the stock turbo which has an inlet of ~2" there is really no need for a 3.5" pipe. Use the stock inlet pipe (rubber accordian) with the stock turbo and maf.

I am logging boost via JDM map and looking at the logs they look idential at 8000rpm's..
I have not seen any changes to my airflow readings or load after switching to the blitz open filter..And being as though the intake pipe is behind the MAS it CAN have an effect but I have not noticed anything changed when switchg to this from the accordian..What should I be looking for? Even my fuel trims were exactly the same after a reset.
My problem is heat, I will be making a setup soon to run a cold air intake on an ACD equipped evo. I guess I will have to suffer until then.

That would help but I would rather not waste my time unless I have a sealed high pressure scource for something like that, like the LONG SNORKEL monster sport intake box lid.

madmax. DUDE your oil catch can is installed wrong. you need to mount it horizontal not verticle. make the clear housing not go sideways like that.
by the way thats the same walmart compressor oil catch can I am using on my pcv side. I use the weaponR on the vent side.
