Nice looking little computer you got there! I built something very similar to this last year but had issues with heat build up in the summer and the micro-drive I was using (IBM) would burn its bearings out in the summer from over temp conditions and high vibration from the vehicle. I tried putting some micro fans in but then the noise was unbearable so that didnt work out for me either. I also had some problems with power in-rush that caused the system to act funny. The circuits in the car are very very noisy but I wanted to get around using a PC power supply to save space. I was using the system as a DVD player and Navigation though so it was under a pretty high load most of the time. Using the CD case is an ingenious idea btw!

That is awesome, have you tested SERIAL->USB converters with it for laptops that don't have serial?

Yes, those do work perfectly... even a USB Bluetooth adapter that emulates a serial port will work fine. The handshake is not very complex for the UTEC.

Dashboard instrumentation is complete and functional.. PM me if you would like to beta test the dashboard... I have a few more things to do on it.. But I want to be certain its fairly bulletproof.

I am going to adjust the layout a little to make it more readable, Also, what format size (640x480, 800x600, 800x480) do you guys use most often..

I'm not going to announce any additional features that I've been working on.. Trade secrets but you'll like them..

Since the Dashboard is more or less done, I'm going to convert it to pocketPC2002 since I can see this sort of thing useful on a PDA (and log to file)

I just discovered an interesting unintended feature of the DigitalDash, Turns out that playback can display an ENTIRE SESSION, that is, if you captured the output of the built-in UTEC dashboard, it will reproduce (playback) the dashboard in real time through a telnet connection exactly as if it was playing live on the UTEC.. If you edit maps, or do other things, it will play back EVERYTHING, in theory you could play back someones map-editing session as part of a tutorial.. Not to mention 15 people can be viewing this data at the same time, either in playback or in real time.

I also created a "Repeater" function, that can run on my server, basically I can upload my logfiles in real time to my server, and users can stream the data as its coming in, I also added a webcam/video capture feature w/ overlay but that will come shortly once the initial dashboard app works..

wow...now all I need is a pocket pc, a utec and af tuner. Awesome work. Any plans to work on that ballistic gauge version or the screen? I saw it but dont know what you're gonna do with it.

I am working on a pocketpc version of the program, its basically similar to what you see in the screenshot.. I have a standalone fully functional computer that I built for tuning my car, I was able to produce output to an VFD display and a standard computer screen at the same time, but I'm otherwise not sure which component your referring to, I've ordered a developer kit for a windows CE device that can use a 640x480 touch screen, but it hasn't been shipped to me yet, I may sell those.

Well, I'd like to use a Pocket PC with windows ce to run the data, but the specific screen I'd like to see would be something more like ballistic gauges opposed to numeric readouts. Either way, its wild and perfect for what Im planning on doing.

Numeric seems more practical for what my intentions are, analog gauges just seem odd to use on a computer, but I can do them if there is enough demand for it (the dashboards are interchangable from the listener)

I am also adding a diagnostic mode dashboard that uses the logger data from one of the alternat loggers (Don't remember which one)

the graphing is getting there, it will have 3d graphing and scatter data, it will also be an alternate "dashboard" since they all connect to the listener in the same way so components can be added on fairly easily.

one future plan is to offer a skinnable dashboard replacement, where you can customize the look to what you want. (intended for you in-car-pc enthusiasts..)

since the app has evolved a little, it looks like TCP-IP (either dialup networking, or local loopback minimum) will be a requirement for the app to run in win98, it will work on all other 32 bit windows platforms (winsock has to be installed for it to function, but if there is a need, I can release a version that has no networking built in)

Basically for the dashboard to function, it has to be using one of the loggers (Shift-1) but there is a button you can press to start and stop the logging to disk, so it can display without saving the data if your just tooling around with it.. However to use the playback feature you have to save the log to disk, you can then select it and play it back later (you can also pick any point in the timeline and jump to it) but I haven't finished the interface for that yet. And playback is in real time (5Hz)

Hopefully, it will be able to start itself up, and not require intervention.. However one cool detail is if your using a terminal program (telnetted into it) while the dashboard is up, the dashboard will pause if you switch to another thing, like editing maps, it will continue where it left off when you are done and start the logging up again (shift-1 from the main UTEC menu) since its aware of its desired datastream and will come alive when it sees it)

at this point, I'm fairly certain that the app will run with both the EVO utec, and the WRX utec.. the app is version aware (it can detect what version flash and type of utec its connected to)
the only major difference inthe shift-1 logs is the MAF reading, on the WRX it appears to be in Volts, and on the EVO its in Hz.. though I'd like to get a data log from a WRX UTEC owner with complete log (Capture data from the moment its connected, toggle through the different logs, then start up the logger-shift-1 (CSV)) I want a capture of all the data, everything from the connection screen to the other displays, to a long duration Shift-1 log...

I completely forgot to mention, the dashboard also works with the TurboXS Tuner (with or without the UTEC at the same time)

And its aware of the Wideband AFR column and will display AFR if its detected.
