Max Intercooler Size

Hey guys,

I'm starting my intercooler shopping since i'm getting back my tax refund shortly and i'm wondering whats the max comfortable size intercooler we can fit on our stock front ends without any modification. From what i've been reading 7" is max height but i've seen people with bigger, so i dont knwo what to think. Let me know what you guys had that fits without modification. Thanks!

If you're shopping for an intercooler for your Lancer I'd recommend buying based on economy. While a good sized intercooler will benefit you, too large won't make much of a difference or, in a worst case scenario, could cause a pressure drop. The stock Evo FMIC is a good size to use as a guide. It's a little on the big side for Lancers as far as need goes, but it's not too big, and it should be large enough to grow with your car as you mod it further.

Yeah i was looking at the stock evo intercooler, but it seemed a little overkill and doesnt look right with the stock lancer front end, it seems more suited for the open mouth evo front end. I was lookin at some wider but not as tall intercoolers typically used in honda set ups. I figured it might be decent since the lancer oz's front end mouth is wider than it is high. Just need a general figure from you guys. Nothing over 21" wide? Nothing over 9" high? Whatta ya think

Using the OEM front bumper, you'll probably have to shave some material off the backend of that bumper for exact fitment.

on most bumpers. you have to shave some to get the pipe to fit right.. not sure on measurements.

I got it to fit on my car. All you have to do is cut out a little bit here and there.

look at spearco intercoolers, they have many different styles that may fit what you want. they are high quality (a lot of companies use them for their specific bolt-on kits). They will be fairly pricey though.

I used the Road Race intercooler. I'm not really thrilled by it, nor have I ever been, but it fits and it works for now. I'll swap it out when I get back to buiding the engine in a few billion years.

Yeah i'm looking to keep the word "pricey" out of the equation. I'm not lookin for a top end setup. Just a decent enough intercooler to keep the charge cool, fit well, and not break the bank. I'm keeping an eye out for used evo8 intercoolers, i just hate the down facing inlet and outlet pipes, makes custom fabricating intercooler pipes a *****. gotta get some 90degree elbows for that

look on ebay for used intercoolers. it really depends on what you consider "pricey". there are cheap intercoolers on ebay, im not too sure about those, but Megan Racing makes intercoolers for around 250+, and they are decent products, so maybe you should look into that. to truly research what you are looking for, we need a price range.

150-250 is next to nothing for a FMIC. Keep in mind you'll need to figure out a way to mount it too. If you can get anything that will fit at that price you definitely should grab it before the seller thinks better of it. The only thing you have to add for the Evo FMIC is 2 45 degree bends. You'd need the 90's for any FMIC.

I have a 25 X 6 on my car that I got off of ebay. It fills the mouth of the front bumper perfectly. the peice was custom made from a guy out of wisconson his name was jrprp1. If that doesn't work search for dsm fmic and look for the 2G kit. The 2G kit that he has been selling lately looks exactly like mine with the 25 X 7 X 2.8 core.

I have the intercooler pressed between the brackets that came with the RRM FMIC kit and the actual bumper beem. It wooks well and looks pretty bad ***. He will make the end tanks with whatever size piping you need and position the inlet/outlet where you need them if you e-mail him with the desire to make a custom intercooler.
