strange humming

****EDITED*****problem solved

i overlooked the power of spark plugs, and thats why I had the problem. But i changed it to NGK Bkr7e with the bigger plug wires and it runs great now. No more fluttering sound, sweet. For the humming, fellow evomers say its just the fuel pump, so im fine with that. I hope this post can help someone further down the road.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. i got my rrm non ic kit on today, in idle i hear a strange high pitch humm like a jet or something. when im driving the noise goes away, but if im at a light or something it comes back again. I don't know if this is normal for a turboed car or faulty setup. Besides the kit I have a magnaflow cat and a ractive muffler. They guy at jegs who sold me the cat said something about the cat resonating turbos, is this what he meant?

2. also, I didnt want to start a new thread, but when I'm in about 3rd gear I believe, or at 40mph, I hear a scraping noise and it feels like the turbo is stuttering, but this is when I stay at 40. When Im higher or lower in mph I dont hear/feel it, is this cuz Im in that rpm for too long?

Uh I don't think either issue is normal. The first could be a resonating issue or something is loose and I have no idea about the second.

Have you tried to see where the noise is coming from in the engine bay? You could also try rechecking all the bolts and lines and the clearances to make sure nothing is rubbing.

i have that humming sound...i know what your talking about. does it happen at low rpms before full boost? it might be the weather because i can only hear it when its cold. mine usually tapers off in about 15 mins. im pretty sure its normal. what oil are you using btw?

The humming could be your fuel pump. That damn thing is loud.

the noise sounds like the intake going into the turbo. Its sounds differnt at low turbo speeds and changes when boost really kicks in. As for the scrapping noise, im not sure.

in response of noel(lancer2show), right now im using 87 untill i get my oil changed, thats this next empty tank coming up. For manny, you say it could be the fuel pump? Is there a way to silence this noise?

You're using 87, as in 87 octane fuel? That could either be a cause of the problem or a cause of a future problem, only run 91 or higher when turboed. If you're using a Walbro fuel pump, you're SOL, they're just nosiy.

alright, that might be the source of the problem too, im gonna go 93 as soon as this tank hits empty, but i forgot to tell you guys too that i havent got it tuned yet, so mike, the guy who helped me said to run easy and dont floor it yet till i get it tuned, hes setting me up with a dyno asap. Could this be the cause of the scraping noise?

I would strongly suggest (as would I think any turboed lancer owner or turboed car owner) you fill up with 93 octane now, not when the tank runs dry but now. You are effectively killing your motor how you are runnning it, untuned and with low octane fuel. It's entirely possible/likely you have knock which kills your pistons and your rods which might be part of the noise. I wouldn't be surprised if you have blowby problems in the future. The RRM instructions explicitly say to use 91 or higher octane for a reason.

alright, maybe I can solve this issue by asking you guys what your turbo sounds like when its building psi. Does it make a constant woosh sound with no hard noises or does it go woosh then does a hard spooling? auto owners preffered but I'd like to know about manual too
