Custom Turbo Kit....

I figured i'd start a new thread for discussion.

I've always been a believer of "if you can do it yourself, why pay for someone else to do it". So i've started toying with the idea of custom turbo'ing my 09GTS somewhere down the road. I did it with my 03OZ about 2 years ago.

It seems theres a wealth of turbo parts that will bolt to the lancer from the EVO/Ralliart. So really the more i look into it, the only two obstacles are setting the correct PSI by either welding an internal wastegate shut and using an external, or changing the spring, AND fuel delivery.

I know the RRM kit uses a 5th injector, but my question is.........why. The only thing i've come up with so far is just to tune more accurately. All of the old turbo kits for the previous lancers used an FMU or some kind of comparable rising rate fuel pressure system to compensate for boost, and using 6-7psi there was no problems with fuel delivery. Sure it wasnt rock solid tuned air fuel ratios, but when i had my OZ turbo'd it was always consistently running in the safe zone with usually a 11:1 afr under boost.

My question basically is, why arent more people building custom kits, or even considering the idea. In my experience of what i built, and drove before, i dont see any reason why a conservatively boosted and tuned car cant work fine. I know theres the whole "you need timing control too" but the previous lancers ran fine without any manual timing control. The car adjusts timing itself to a degree, so as long as you keep the car in good running condition, and pay attention to your gauges, it should take care of itself. Maybe all the added bells and whistles are more just for added security and reliability for those people who try to boost a car and get by with a boost gauge only? With an EGT gauge, wideband, and boost gauge, you should have no problem knowing if the car is running healthy or not

Thoughts...........and feel free to bash

Guess guys arent as daring with the 08+ lancers as they were with the 02-03 lancers haha

Hey, im doing my own custom trubo for my 2009 GTS. Ive already gotten most of the parts for my kit which has totaled to ~$1500, i only have about $500 more to put into it to complete it. The thing with the 09 is that its the 2.4L. I like the potential in this build because it gives a lot of options rather than a bolt on where you are limited to what the kit comes with. I guess the answer to your question is "the know how" about the new lancers and the fact some people may be intimidated and dont want to mess something up with their car that they cant fix or will be costly. Which it is true if you dont know much about turboing dont do it, there is a possibility of really messing up your engine. Also with a higher compression ratio than the 4b11 and 4b11t at 10:1 im excited to start this build due to higher ratio more power from mass of air-fuel mix due to higher thermal efficiency. Although higher compression can cause knocking and harmonic imbalance a 10.5:1 ratio running high octane fuel should be fine. Im going to through in some stronger higher performance internals from a CSRT4 hopefully (I just need to get confirmation on the compatible parts) to handle the extra power from the turbo. I do have a thread i started today for this that ill keep updated and you can read into that if you're interested!

When you say automatic on his ES you mean the CVT right? So if you're friend is retarded then for wanting to turbo his cvt, then I guess RRM is retarded then too? lol kidding. no its not retarded and yes it can be done because RRM has made one for the cvt. Also throughout evolutionm ive read in some threads people talking about guys in japan turboing cvts and getting ~280whp without any problems. Its possible but dont expect to get much power with a stock cvt with no modification of any kind. The RRM kit runs on ~7psi I believe which is fairly low boost, im assuming the modified their cvt putting on a cooler and maybe tapped into the ecu and tweaked it. But this is the problem im out to get answers for is what can you mod on the cvt to make it handle more torque. In theory cvt's can handle a decent amount of torque (of course not as much as manual tranny's but we wont get into that) with the right components. Look at city buses I believe most have cvt's and run a fair amount of torque, but im not 100% on the cvt as of yet ill really have to start looking into it more and get a detailed understand of how the mitsubishi cvt works and all its components.

Just posted in the other thread........I'm located on LI.........when you get ready for the turbo install, lets get together. I custom turbo'ed my 03OZ, so i'd love to get my hands dirty on an 09 GTS turbo project, before i start considering mine.

Who's building your manifold? Doesnt the 4b11 and 4b12's exhaust manifolds mate up? You should check into a modified EVO X manifold if so.

well i had contacted vinny ten in west babylon and gtspec and I have plans and tolerances drawn up on Solid works but i will definitely look into a modified evo x manifold that may be a better bet and a more cost effective one.

all lancers are cvt even if you dont have the paddle shifters or anything doesnt mean its not a cvt people seem to get that only the gts have the cvt

^this is true all the new lancers have either CVT or STANDARD transmissions.

no im serious im not saying he should do it unless he knew what he was doing. I say he goes somewhere to get it done. He'd be the first that i heard of.
