Best thread about it. Only upgrade I can think of to an auto tranny is a heavy duty torque convertor...where you would get one though is beyond me. Plus, I wouldn't consider a tranny swap (you'd need a correctly fitting one first to) since the cost would severely outweight the benefits.

You're not to blow stock internal . . . it's just that the slushbox (except for the Supra TT and WRX) can't handle the constant demand for surging HP/TQ from the motor.

Only time you can blow stock internal - lean condition or get greedy w/ boost or can't tune worth his salt/bad advice from mechanics/tuners.
