for techno rock or anything else with a crisp beat I would get a sealed box made from good quality 3/4" MDF board or 1/2" plexy (nice but expensive)

The other major problem is most people who use 15" woofers don't upgrade or power the rest of their system enough to keep up with it and so it totally overpowers the whole system making it sound like crap. Virtually every system I have seen with 15''s used there is a serious lack of power to the rest of the system. I'm not saying 15's cant sound good but it takes more than just the 15 and an amp to build a good system and if your puttin out that much bass you better have a killer system to complement it
my system now will keep up if i get the JBL 1000 watt sub

kenwood 4 channel 640 watts awp
rockfosgate speakers

my highs and mids are as good as u are going to get em..

SubZero makes pretty good boxes but for a 15" sub in a nice sound system you may want to look into custom boxes. I had my box built custom for my trunk and sub setup and I am WAY happier with it than any premade boxes I have had in the past

is there something i can read, either a book or online, on sound in the car, particularly discussing reasoning scientifically o ndifferent aspects of customizing an audio setup? I plan on doing a system soon and want to not screw it up. Plus always an interesting read if you're learning something beneficial.

I say ditch it. If you want a pretty kick *** system. Might be able to hook you up with a 12" oz audio sub 1400 watts and a locally made custom bomber box for about $320 plus shipping. Let me know if you would be interested.

The best thing I've seen is the Autosound 2000 tech breifs. They were published years ago and dispell many myths in car audio and explain the simple things you can do for better sound. You can also read "The Loudspeaker Cookbook". It explains enclosure theory and how a speaker works very well.

1 15" XXX will keep up with just about anything. having worked with them, installed them, and knowing some of the people who build them, they are without a doubt one of the best woofers out there. I've installed them in sealed and ported, I prefer them ported to 28 Hz, which gives you blindingly powerful low, low bass.

In a blind listening test JL reps have chosen the XXX as a better driver than the W7. THAT says a lot.
