Sub Positioning that is not normal.
Has anyone yet tried removing the glove box, and tried to make a sort of hidden enclosure/bandpass box in thier?
Alpine have done this too thier Benz.. and its tickled my fancy, just wanted to know if neone else has done it yet ?
Pete.

Never heard anyone doing that before, but it's a pretty cool idea if you didn't want a glove box...
why do they call it a glove box... it's not a box, and no one has gloves in there do they?

I store my gloves in the glovebox.
But on a side note, you'd need an awfully small sub to make that an effective enclosure. Especially if you've got plans of going bandpass.
Alpines Benz doesn't just have a custom removed glovebox/sub combo. They've got an entirely redone interior with equal pathlengths to each speaker. The whole dash is custom built.

i would think you would only be able to fit an 8 or so if you were going to give it ample air space
. However if it can be done in our cars kick ***!Edit: would you leave the glovebox open? if not you would need an *** load of dynamat (not that i know how much it takes to fill an *** or anything)
Just a thought... keep up posted!

Jesus, Cup... do you have a picture of horns up as your wallpaper or something?! Thats all you ever seem to talk about. Yes, we're aware that such a thing exists. Yes, some of us know they're great. No, they're really not worth $600-800 unless you're in some serious comps.
Okay, back on topic.
You could probably throw an 8 into a custom fiberglass box shaped to fit in the glovebox opening. Or, if you'd like to take it a step further, you could probably put a 10 into the space behind the dash with quite a bit of custom fiberglass. My subs are far too large to try this with, but if someone's got an 8 kicking around, I'd be willing to make a test box, and let you all see the process and make up some rough dimensions. (not willing to rip my dash apart for days to make a 10" box though. Not unless someone's gonna pay for the time that is)
Just as a sidenote, I wouldn't set it up at all like the stealth has it. That one's pretty damned foolish actually. The sub would sound and perform much better downfiring into the footwell. Sure, you'll never see it, but you'll definately hear it much clearer.

why not put subs in your engine bay, or in the steering wheel, or have 4 mounted on each rim. these ideas sound equally stupid to me....
hank, you just proved it's stupid. you said you'd want it firing down, and then you wouldn't be able to see it. well then what's the point of having it there? to me, the whole point of mounting it in that position would be display, but then it loses functionality. if you want to make it more functional, you lose the ability to display it effectively, which was the whole point in the first place.
what's wrong with mounting subs in the trunk? come up with a neat fiberglass design or something. you'd get more props for having a nice looking functional setup, rather than "unusual".

i wouldn't think the end result would be worth the effort. i agree, subs in the trunk with a glassed install would be sweeter and sound 100% better. and if im not mistaken you can not compete any USACi or IASCA sq shows with a sub forward of the b pillar
Well, perhaps there are some folks out there who like their trunk space. For example, my neighbor is a courier, and often loads his trunk to capacity (when driving the car, and not the truck) He still wanted a system. So I set him up with a 10" sub under the passenger seat (had to lift the seat 1", and build a custom FG peice that was under the seat and took up some of the center console airspace). Amp mounted under the drivers seat. Though he won't win any comps, his system sounds just fine.
Sometimes unusual circumstances call for unusual solutions.

Haven't thought about the glovebox, but Marc Turner (#2 IASCA in NA for Sound Q) told me that he could fit a 12 in the dash!!
but i remember helping him put the 12 in his dash and it was a pain in the ars, so i promptly refused to do it to my car!!

it's one thing if you have a reason why you want to mount a sub or something somewhere else. such as the case with your friend, and wanting trunk space. (i have a 10" in my trunk and i still have plenty of trunk space....) just saying if you are doing it to be different, it's just stupid. spend more time and money on the actual system and making it sound better rather than coming up with something unusual and ineffective.
