Ok So I had an old pyramid amp lying around so i decided to put it in my car until my new one arrives. its a PB-449x. anyway i blew my old amp, god only knows how, its smoked up pretty good. well anyway i put the pyramid one in, and set the gain and the bass control to 0 and the HU volume to 1. i can hear the radio barely and the not the subs, so i set the gain to about 1/4 of the way up, now i can barely hear the subs. and then proceed to turn up the HU volume, when i get to anything louder then a whisper, the subs cut out and the amp goes into protective mode. now i check the speakers wires, replaced em, and then tested the amp without them hooked up as well. and still the same result. so i disconnect the cap and try again, and still the same problem. im pretty sure the ground on the cap is good cause it works fine, so i ground the amp to the same location. and i still get nothing, i havent tried using the RCAs from my other 2 amps yet but ill probably do that tomorrow. it does it in bridged and stereo mode. but other then that, what could be the problem.... remember it still goes into protective mode with no speakers attached

The amp might have died while in storage.

You might want to consider checking the contact points for the external wiring, like power, ground, ect. I'm talking about the point where you connect the lines to the amp, not anything else.

I've had an amp that behaved similarly to this. It turns out a solder point inside the amp broke free, maybe from too much BOOM.

If you're getting a new amp anyway, I would'nt waste the effort, but I would consider checking it out if you want to hold onto the one you've got.

At the very least, you'll eliminate a potential source of the problem.

 

I'm pretty sure the answer lies in your ohm load... Pyramids aren't known for being the most stable items on the planet... unless you're looking for a nice stable paperweight.

Rewire your subs into a higher load, then try again.

if u want more resistance with 3 subs..i dunno what u would do. right now u have a resistance of 1 1/3 so it's pretty low (assuming each sub has a resistance of 4 ohms). u might want to connect them in series so u add resistance..but then u would get 12 ohm resistance..ive never looked into wiring 3 subs so i don't know what to suggest. hank should know though. where are u hank??

EDIT: now that i read again, u dont even have your subs hooked up so it cant be your subs. but if u do have the subs hooked up, u would have a resistance of 2/3 which is extremely low..

 

well it can't be the ohm load if it does it without speakers connected to the amp

 

what's your fuse ratings? your amp is probably pulling too much current (well it almost certainly is pulling too much current if it goes into protection mode).

your speaker load is definitely way to low. 2/3 ohm is ridiculous. but you say it goes into protection without subs connected? what's the voltage output on the headunit?

but it doesnt even matter now, im just gunna go buy a
JBL bp1200.1 anyone got any comments on that?

 

The BP1200.1 is a nice, solid amp. It's not feature packed, and the gains can be a bit of a ***** to set... but as far as raw watts, you'll dig it.

As for the .66 ohm thing... I don't know that the amp will handle that kind of load for daily driving... I had one of mine to .25 ohm for a few burps at a comp, but I also had a spare. The one that did the burps handled it... but it wasn't happy.
