I found it optimal to place them like so:

I was gonna flush mount them into the door nicely, but didnt have time since I was about to move that week. Maybe in the future...

High end unlike low end freq are directional. So place them pointing at the target. For example you. Now depending on the tweeter...some allow you to move the field of focus around you should mount them head level. My jetta has them in the top of the doors in the back and like CityKnights car in the front. My new Lancer has them where CityKnights are placed also. If you place them to far to the side of the tragets for example right to your left the passenger will not hear them and the sound will be uneven. Best place is out in front of you at the corner of the sound field....like CityKnights application.

Does this help?

Not all component speaker sets are designed to have the tweeter mounted higher than the midrange. By mounting the tweeters higher up, you are more likely to get phase distortion and it can end up sounding very harsh. By just mounting the tweeters pointing at your head and the mids remaining in the factory position, you will have them on different planes, and again, the sound quality can suffer. Unfortunately, our cars don't have a spot to mount tweeters that is going to be close to the midrange and stay on the same plane.

Your best bet is going to be to hook them up to a long piece of wire and just let them float around for a bit. Use some double stick tape or whatever you can find to try putting them in different locations for a couple of days at a time. Then just try to mount them close to the location that sounded best to you.

You both make good points. The one thing that I spotted that needs to be mentioned is "pointing [the tweeters] at the target". Some tweeters have a better on axis response, while others are better off axis. My Diamond Audio components, for example, were phenominal off axis. I had them mounted in the A pillars, pointing at the rear view mirror (more or less). The sound stage was wide, very linear and very focused.
But yeah, Never Satisfied nailed it...just move them around from spot to spot until you find the best location for your ears.
