I just got an 02 lancer and was wanting to put my stereo (head unit in) but i dont want to screw up the trim or anything. It doesnt look as simple as my 94 taurus was and im a poor 17 yr old male who doesnt wanna pay 60 to get it installed when i can do it with the help of you great people soooo please help me asap pics would be great but text is fine.-Ryan
It's actually a lot easier then it looks. Take off the tray that sits underneath the a/c controls (just the two screws. it should just pull out after that). Then if you reach your hand into that hole, you can just push from the back of the a/c unit (towards you), the whole thing will just pop out. Does this make any sense? After it pops out, you have to undo the a/c wires from underneath the steering wheel. One is black one is blue, then the a/c controls will pull all the way out. You should see the screws for the headunit then. Good luck.
NO NO NO NO NO! Dont try pulling the trim off with out doing something first. Take the climate control dials off! There are 2 or more screws behind them. After that, try pulling the trim off, or popping it off by going in behind it. One of the edges should come up, and then use a cloth wrapped screw driver to pry the rest of the trim plate off. The it will be real easy. Just 4 very obvious screws and your old head unit is outa there. Post back if you need more help.
Pictures of this?
Can any of you possibly post a picture or two of this? I'd like to see it visually before I tear up my brand new car.
On a related note, I called up Crutchfield today to order master installation sheets for car stereos and they currently don't have the Lancer sheets ready yet. The guy I spoke with noted that they have the images and wording down, it's just not in master-sheet form yet. Not sure if you guys have ever used these, but they run $5 and they save a world of time and frustration. I bought 'em for my old '95 Eclipse and it was so easy.
Thanks.

That would be cool...wonder how many owners there are now around here?
Oh yeah, did you get the new head unit installed? I'm building up the courage. I'm sure it's not a *huge* deal but you know how it is with a new car...

thats actually a really good idea. the first car you do though is going to turn into the experimental car and the second one will be the best cause you know what really needs to be done. thats the same thing that me and a friend did with our Injen CAI, and our wire mesh grills. good luck to you both, and maybe some time when i pay off my credit card i too will install a head unit and some speakers. peace.
