Affordable DIY Anti-Theft Deterence

Ok, we all know that an alarm system doesn't really provide full protection for the professional thieves, I think the use of etching the VIN and using a steering wheel club will deter the real crooks more that an alarm system, but theres nothing we can really do for vandals though !

Thumbs up

That id sticker thing is a really good idea though.

Make sure you get the VINEtcher also, the dealers do it for over $250, it permanently etchs your VIN number onto the windows and thieves will have to replace all the glass before they can resell your car, I think ID Sticker is more a visual deterent saying your car is registered to the NVIP. I got both for $26.95, that along with the original steering wheel Club on eBay all for under $60cdn, which my car is now known as to be protected as "Layer No.2" protection by the NVIP. Layer No. 3 protection would mean adding a kill switch on top of those on Layer No. 2 and Layer No. 4 is using a GPS locating service like LoJack or Boomerrang ontop of the Layer No. 2 deterences.

Thumbs up Etched My Ride Today ...Pics

Ok, I just etched all my windows today with the kit I ordered from VINEtcher.com. It was fairly easy to do and took me about an hour to do a good job. If anyone is interested in ordering a kit please PM me so I can give you a my name as a referral and I get a $3 rebate from each referral.

Here is some data from the National Crime Center on the type of cars most stolen in 2002 and our Lancers is there under the Mirage name plate:

I got mine done by Sherlock (www.sherlock.ca). They actually mark about 50 different places on the car, but not with the VIN itself, with a sherlock number, that starts with 3 letters that correspond to the closest international airport (YUL in my case). I had it done by the dealer and it looks very professional, at least, on the windows where it is visible.

just my 2cents

Sherlock is great, only problem is that they want $199+ to do it and cost as much as an actual alarm system, the VIN kits cost only $19.95us and I'am automatically registered into the NVIP(National Vehicle Identification Program) data base as sponsored by the North American Insurance Bureau ...well I'am a cheapskate want can I say !
