It really depends... bottom line you get what you pay for. Search the site. This thread has been spoken to many times. Prices range all over the board. What you want to look for is not just what it is at typical rpm range of 2k-3k.. but what is it when you sitting still.... engine running... idle... not all beasts are created equal. And even within that group... how much do you need ... are you running a 1000 watt system or half of that.. more ? It all comes into play.

And once you find the one you want, don't forget to upgrade your ground wires (HKS makes a nice earthing kit) and your power wires.

You won't be able to find a HO alternator at your local Auto Shop or dealership, and may even be hard pressed to find one to rebuild your existing alternator or let alone a new one. I had to shop around on the net and found a few places that build them... however nobody responded to my questions except for one (see link below).

To answer your question... is killing your alternator... more than likely stresses it out big time... is hurting the battery... most likely that too... some say you can get a cap but that is only a bandaid really... what you need is to bump up the alternator. There is a formula that you can use to determine what size you need, though I cannot remember it off hand.
